Description One thing that has always bothered me about Star Trek and Starfleet in general is that they always used NCC as a vessel classification regardless of the vessel's type, configuration or mission profile. So I thought that since Starfleet was technically patterned after the US Navy, that each type of vessel type should have it's own designation. So I took the bull by the horns and created this Tech Manual style page to show the different designators.

I belive the "heavy Exploration Cruiser" should have a CEH, instead of CEL (which is already assigned to "light exploration cruisers").

Personally i'm not a fan of such a militarized starfleet, but whatever... Star Trek has always been very vague when it comes to certain things, so everyone could project his own mindset into it.

There are many who contend that 'NCC' was meant to be something akin to 'Naval Construction Contract', a hull number yes, but nothing to do with hull type. Of course this simple logic does begin to break down with 'NX', 'NAR', 'NSP' and the numerous other seemingly nonsensical ones which appeared from TNG on.

I presume you are aware that this much more logical approach you are taking has been taken before and is indeed quite widely accepted within the fandom community, because you are correct, it makes much more sense.

Prior to "Enterprise" (an alternate-history timeline), I am not aware of any such designations except for 'NX'.  'NX'  signifies that the vessel is experimental, and/or the prototype vessel for the class.
