Waitwaitwait. I'm confused. No matter how Virmir and Lucile merge, horizontally or vertically, they should still have the same total mass when merged. So how does it make sense for vertical merging to make the end result taller?

It does not-- this is a non-canon thing the commissioner wanted to see.Β You can throw anything out of canon that are commissions or involve a character not my own, ha ha.Β The only source of solid Virmir canoncity are the Virmir-World comics.
