Here can be seen the 4 variants of the STM-72 and a STM-72 with some of its various attachments.

The STMG-72 is a light support weapon, bridging the gap between the rifle and LMG. With a bipod and heavy barrel, its more adapted for long— rapid fire. It is the standard support weapon for most infantry squads. It is unable to mount a bayonet. Feeds from standard 30 round STM magazines, expanded casket magazines, or drum magazines.

The STK-72 is a Carbine variant of the STM-72. Mechanically unchanged from the original design. The Carbine comes with a folding stock, enclosed handguard, and its distinctive "Krinkov" muzzle brake known for its bright muzzle flash. It's used by vehicle crew, special forces, airborne troops, and rear-echelon support units. It is unable to mount a bayonet.

The SSR-75 is a special-purpose integrally supressed variant of the STM-72. Designed as a marksman rifle/special forces rifle, the SSR is to be paired with the 5.457S, 7SN (AP), 7SE (JHP), and 7SV (Heavy 85 gr) Subsonic rounds but can also fire regular 5.45x45mm rounds. The rifle has been nicknamed "Vzima" or "Viper" due to it's silent yet deadly nature, and it's common use in the snake-charmers unit.

the large integral supressor of the SSR-75 combined with subsonic ammunition makes it a stealthy weapon with an extremely quiet report and virtually no muzzle flash. However extended bounts of firing can lead to the supressor becoming extremely hot which can reveal operators under thermal imaging. For this reason some choose to wrap their barrels in various materials, both to conceal the sillouette and mitigate this fact.
The SSR-75 also has a unique feature of a bolt-catch firemode, where upon firing a single round, the bolt locks back in the reciever, eliminating the noise from the full bolt cycle. Leaving only the sound of the bolt itself recoiling backwards and locking in place, which can be hard to hear among ambient noise and is impossible to hear in active engagement.

The SSR has gained a reputation even outside of the Stranian armed forces, being one of the few weapons the Stranians refuse to export.
The notion that death can strike silently and you would never hear or see it is a terrifying reality of the enemies of Strania.
All these factors make it a popular rifle within the Stranian special forces who train extensively to miditgate the drop of the subsonic cartridges, assuming they use subsonic rounds.

The SMR-73 or Stumna Marksman Rifle model 1973 is a semi-automatic marksman rifle chambered in the full-power 7.62x60mm cartridge.
With Eurakean and Eserikan-aligned nations using 7.62x52mm battle rifles, they had a range advantage over Stranian forces. This fact was emphasized when Stranian backed forces would often assault Stranian elements from distances where they could do little to retaliate in the Middle Western Conflict.

While the improved STM-72 has a combat range of 800 meters, accuracy at these distances is questionable. And while the 5.45x45mm round has better ranged perfomance than the lighter Stranian 5.55x40mm round, both rounds begin to rapidly loose their effectiveness beyond these ranges.
The SMR-73 has impressive performance out to 800 meters, being able to reliabily penetrate Level III+ plate from over 700 meters.
The 7.62x60mm cartridge was designed as a rimless counterpart to the larger 7.62x62mmR for use in automatic rifles such as the AV-45 during the Patriotic war, the cartidge was soon developed into the 7.62x44mm cartridge used in the ST-52.

The 7.62x60mm round often found use in the RKM-62 GPMG and LBR-53 battle rifle, but flaws with the concept of the battle rifle were soon discovered, which lead to it's retirement in favor of the ST-52. However the 7.62x60mm cartridge would find new use in the SMR-73-58, filling the gap of a powerful long ranged rifle in absence of the LBR-53.

The SMR-73 filled an important niche within the Stranian infantry squad, allowing for effective high-power engagement from distances otherwise unsuitable for the rest of the squad. Stranian infantry doctrine states that if engaged at range where effective relatiation is difficult, the rest of the squad is to supress and engage while the marksman uses their rifle to actively eliminate hostiles.
Making the marksman a crucial element of the Stranian Infantry squad alongside the grenadier and autorifleman.
