Minapedes are massive, heavily armored burrowers, regularly found in the deepest parts of coal mines. They are hated and feared by miners, as they eat the coal the miners are digging up - but also because they are highly territorial and aggressive, prone to attacking at the slightest provocation, and because their burrows may weaken the mine shafts and cause collapses.
Their spade-shaped heads are used both as picks - hammering at the rock to shattering - and as the implements they resemble, allowing them to burrow relatively quickly through even the hardest stone. They have two main methods of travel: walking with their many legs, or tucking those legs back and slithering down tunnels too tight for them to walk in. The floors of these tunnels are worn smooth by the friction, as are the undersides of the Minapedes. The older a Minapede is, the shinier its underbelly; the oldest and biggest ones have almost mirrorlike bellies.
Minapedes normally keep their mandibles clamped shut except when eating, but in certain situations - mating season contests, competing over territory, or when feeling threatened - they will expand the split 'jaw' and use the jagged-edged mandibles to intimidate their foes.
