it can be almost anything ... gesso, plaster, house paint, sand, tiny stones .... i use anything that i can get my hands on ....

Thanks a lot Vishal. I'm using wall putty and texture white to get texture on canvas, but I'm afraid that this may bring cracks after after a year or somthing. I'm not sure. You can see my result here [link]

Gesso is a great binding agent. strongly recommend using that
