Gangadhara is one of the many names of Lord Shiva. As per legend, the sage Bhageeratha had to do ritualistic offerings to the Ganges (imagined as the goddess Ganga) so that his ancestors could get salvation. But the Ganges then would flow only in heaven and wouldn't come down to earth for him to proceed with his rituals. Ganga tells him in arrogance, that if she were to fall as a river down to earth from the heavens, then the earth would not be able to handle her force and hence would result in catastrophe. The sage prays to Lord Shiva to help, who agrees and asks Ganga to flow down with all her might onto his head. The arrogant Ganga then comes down thrashing with tremendous force thinking that Shiva would learn his lesson trying to tame her, but instead Shiva stands unmoved and captures her within his locks and keeps her trapped there. Her arrogance wanes and Shiva plucks out a strand of hair, from where she is allowed to fountain out and bless those who seek her blessings as per Shiva's instructions.
