It washes off, it's not permanent. It's just there to make the muscles stand out. Bodybuilding isn't a beauty contest, it's about lines, size, and proportions. All of that's easier to see with the dark skin color.

Wow, that's stark! I know the tanning they do is more akin to wood staining in the way it alters their color than traditional tanning, and I know they do it to maximize the visibility of their physiques, but for a moment there I thought this was a modified image. It's just such a huge contrast between the skin that's been stained and his natural tone.
