Awesome godrays! Those things give me nightmares, they're so hard to do.

Man I wish I could afford this program. It looks like it would be so awesome! And useful. XD Very nice work. I'd love to visit a place like that.

I think I'm finally going to shell out and get Vue 9 Studio. The way I see it, I can make my own photoreferences. Might seriously speed up my workflow. :3

You might wanna try a Personal Edition before you buy the actual thing! It's completely free & fully working for 30 days.. only limit is the render size!
Btw, what's your config? Vue 9/9.5 needs some serious power to function nicely! Or you might end up frustrated!

I'm running win7, 8 gigs of RAM, GTX 480 nividia graphics card, i5core processor. How does that sound? May I ask what your specs are by comparison?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Vishw In reply to BJPentecost [2011-07-11 10:50:18 +0000 UTC]

Mine is i7 2600, 16GB DDR3, GTX460 1GB OC, Win 7 x64! Built this just for Vue, few months back!
Win 7 64 or 32? 64 bit OS is a must for Vue. i5 is dual or quad? How much GHz? Many features of Vue are optimized for multithreading, so more the cores, happier the Vue & you!

64bit, Dual core, 3.2ghz. Maybe I should wait until I can build a better system? >.>

As I said, download the free version, try it out for few days & then decide!
My previous system [Athlon X2, 1.9GHz, 3GB DDR2 RAM] was much weaker than yours, but that didn't stop me from enjoying Vue. Most of renders here (except 2011 stuff) are created on that machine!

I hope I'm not bothering you with all my questions. ^__^; It's just that finding people to prise information out of on this particular matter is difficult and of the ones I do find, they don't tend to be terribly forthcoming. I did download a trial version a while back and I was able to use it. It worked well enough; I didn't have any complaints aside from some minor lag.

My main concern is render time. The whole point of purchasing Vue would be to speed up my workflow but if renders are going to take 40+ hours, it would defeat the purpose completely. XC So I'm thinking that I might wait till such a time when Vue either starts dappling in GPU based renders, processors improve dramatically, or I win the lotto and can afford a render farm. XD

Anyway, thanks for your thoughts. Tis much appreciated.

No worries! You're always welcome to ask me anything about Vue! I'm no expert, but I try my best!

Yeah.. render times are sometimes showstoppers but there are always some tricks to tackle that! Like avoiding using too much transparent, reflected surfaces e.g. water, glass. Huge clouds & godrays also slows down the renders! So if you can workaround those, then it's still possible! Also there are many tutorials & few very good books available! Those always help!

Now I need some help from you! Which tablet you use? I'm thinking of buying one but I can't afford the likes of Intuos4! My budget is around $90. So is cheaper Wacom Bamboo like this [link] good enough for portraits or matte paintings?

BJPentecost In reply to Vishw [2011-07-12 00:32:03 +0000 UTC]

There are several different kinds of Bamboo tablet you can try. [link] I recommend the Bamboo Fun (although it is over your budget, sadly). If you need a high level of control, you're going to have to shell out the big bucks for an Intuos 4. If you don't need absolute pixel precise control (which it sounds like you may not) you can easily do well with a Bamboo tablet.

You can also try this: [link] I can't vouch for it, I've never tried it, but it's got good reviews and it might be worth looking into.

The bottom line depends entirely on how much control you need. If you don't need insane amounts of control, the simplest Bamboo model will suffice. One thing you might consider doing is looking at customer reviews on places like Amazon.com before you buy.

Here's a factory refurbished Bamboo Fun for $124: [link] 4.5 star reviews which is pretty good.

Let me know if that was helpful. :3

Anything coming from a master painter like you certainly helps!

Yep! Sadly, I can't go over $90! I blew most of my budget on Sandy Bridge config! I don't really think I'll need pixel precise control, but I can't say it with 100% certainty unless I try it! I liked the slimmer looking VT PenPad, but I'll have to check if it's available in India! Also, I have 23 inch fullHD monitor, does that complicate things? How much the size of 'Active Area' matters? Maybe I should go for medium size cuz of fullHD screen!??

Now I'm troubling you with all my questions! ^_^

BJPentecost In reply to Vishw [2011-07-12 14:23:27 +0000 UTC]

You're not troubling me. Master painter? XD Dunno if I'd go that far but thanks for the complement.

The size of your monitor should not be a problem. You will be able to adjust the active area of the tablet though you may not even have to.

Good luck. Let me know how it turns out. :3

Hehehe! Master 'digital' painter then! Well, you certainly are one IMHO! Some of the pieces in your gallery are freakin' amazing!

Thanks! I'll trouble you again when I buy it & use it!
