Description
Wanted to play with dramatic shadow and light. This was also an exercise in not zooming in or shrinking the brush until I felt like I'd added the maximum detail possible at a certain scale. I might return to this occasionally and refine. She ended up more Caucasian than I wanted, but her age is right for the purposes of this painting. Also finally back into painting! You'd think it would have happened sooner, what with visiting a couple of art museums every weekend...

Impact
At first impact I saw a hidden terror in her eye, and her mouth holding back the name of the guilty out of fear of retribution.
I get the feeling that the fear is one of an adult family member, only because the brighter light reflecting on her shoulder gives me the appearence that the darkness is one created in her mind, and not nessecarily the environment itself.
The detail of the face is perfect, no need to continue, but I would like to see more "description" of the darkness on her right side. I get the impression that she is feeling smaller then that which she is staring at, but is willing to take a stand against that fear if push comes to shove.
I keep wanting to come back to that bright reflection on her shoulder, wondering where she is at having a bright light is above her, yet she still feels intimidated by the darkness of her own creation.
I wanted to go 4 stars on the vision and originality, but my inability to better understand the shadows slowly enveloping her caused me to withold a half star.

Those shadows are indeed a place to consider. I could visualize her entire backstory with some time spent on them. I would like to see it remain dark, but maybe "lighter shades" or different levels of dark creating more of a description or backstory?
I am by no means an artist, so what little I offer is just that, little. But you have a lot of genius going on here, and a million different directions to take with very little needed to take you there.
Let me know when it is finished, I would love to see the end of the story here.

Thank you so much for the thoughtful critique! I always like to know what kind of reaction or emotion the viewer of the picture experiences. Your interpretation is especially interesting because from my point of view, she is mostly feeling uncertain about facing an authority figure in some sense, although not necessarily an adult family member. Trepidation can obviously include fear.
At this stage, I do wonder where to take this next, so perhaps I could give the shadows a bit more definition.

This is beautiful but slightly creepy as she resembles my younger sister in terms of facial shape. Anyways, glad you're back!

Something from you, it's been a while! But the wait was just rewarding. Wow, this gorgeous. And the style of it, too. <3

Aww, thank you so much! I'm glad you like this experimental piece. It was particularly fun to paint because I was only using layers to track its progression, and did the actual painting in a more "traditional" way using digital medium. Maybe if I continue, eventually I'll have enough progression moments to make an interesting GIF.
