The Beginning;
When Will’s identical twin Michael fell ill and could no longer see, Will was approached by his brother’s boss Mr Becker to be his replacement for a mission to go into space. He willingly accepted the offer and for the next four months Will was trained in what he would be facing. Zero gravity, sample collecting, how to use the technology in the spacecraft and he to do safety checks. The day of the mission Will went to visit his brother and speak to him and that he’ll see him soon.
Will got suited up and got into the spacecraft and waited for take off and just as he heard the engines roar a strange flash shot across the main screen, shrugging this off as a flash of like from the sun he ignored it and then minutes later he took off. As he travelled through space, in the distance he could see mars but he shouldn’t be this close to mars as he has now long been in space for roughly a day.
The next day when he woke up he could see Saturn in the vast distance which causes him to start panic as his concept of time is all wrong, how could he see Saturn already he was told it would take 3-4 years. Will spent the next four hours talking to himself trying to comprehend what was happening and he decided to call the station back on Earth but got no response.
As the craft stopped between Saturn and Titan (Saturn’s largest moon) Will got himself ready to go out into space and start collecting samples of the small rocks floating. Amazing little things, on one side they seemed like normal rocks you would find back home but on the other side they glowed like a rainbow, one rock he saw just in front of him interested him and it wasn’t glowing but more like flowing with a red and purple light from inside the rock itself.
He grabbed it and admired it longer than he probably should of when he could feel things bashing into his back and as he turned to look some of the rocks from Saturn’s ring has broken out and is sending a huge debris field straight towards him, seeing this Will immediately began pulling himself back into the ship with the sound of the craft being battered with rocks echoing around him. Lights start flashing and a robotic voice starts repeating “Warning, warning, engine breach”. Now in hysterics, he screams through the crafts communicator about how he needs help with the response he got being “Put your key into the console and press the blue button that pops up. Remember to be seated and locked in when you do this”.
Fearing the worst Will did as the voice said but nothing happened, from behind him light started to break into the cockpit he was in and as it did a blinding blue light surrounded him and when it cleared he was entering Earth’s atmosphere however, as he did the craft began spinning out of control which caused him to smash his helmet on the control panel. The same robotic voice from earlier began repeating itself again but with a different message “Engine energy overload, Warning, Warning” Will’s skin began to burn and that same rock he was fascinated with earlier was now floating in front of him. The red and purple light was now flowing all around the cockpit, this light now began to flow into him fusing with his DNA and caused a feeling of pain to which he wouldn’t of been able to imagine, the sheer anguish of pain caused him to start losing consciousness with the last thing he he saw was the craft heading straight towards the ocean.
Waking up different; The Beginning;
As his eyes began to flicker and open everything around him was a strange shade of red or purple, Will got up from the bed he was in and in front of him was a glass screen that appeared to be some kind of viewing room. He got moved to get out of bed and as he got to his feet he collapsed. He couldn’t feel anything, he yelled for help and within moments a group of men in lab coats entered the room and the men entered the viewing room. Two of them he didn’t recognise but the third man was Mr Becker. The men in lab coats began checking over Will and one of them took out a walkie talkie and said “All clear”. The men in with Will left and the three men from the viewing room came in and asked him how he was feeling. After nearly two hours of talking, what Will learnt shocked him and made him enraged. One of the men was a British military official and the other was an American military official. The mission Will accepted was an off the record test of an experimental engine using a new type of power source, Mr Becker was non stop apologizing for not telling Will the whole truth as he was a civilian.
After a few days of precautionary observation, Will was forced to sign a NDA (Non-Disclosure agreement) and later released to the care of a hospital in Toronto Canada. For three months the hospital worked on trying to help Will walk again but nothing seemed to work.
One night Will woke up to a man standing in the doorway of his room and just as Will was going to press the panic alarm the man spoke out. “Please don’t do that, I’m here to help you I promise”. The man got close enough to Will that the moonlight allowed him to see the man’s face. He looked familiar but he couldn’t figure out why, the man pulled out a syringe of this strange silver liquid and said “Give me your arm”, to which Will argued that he wouldn’t and that he doesn’t even know the man.
“Fair point” the man chuckled and he then suggested a deal, if the man can tell him things that only Will himself would know then, he has to let the man inject him with the liquid. Will accepted the deal as there was no way that the man could know things only Will knew.
With only one sentence the man would completely shock Will, this phrase was “The rock glowed red and purple”.
Knowing that Will hadn’t even told the military men that, he allowed the man to inject the liquid and after he did, the man began to walk away but he stopped when will asked him a question “How did you know that”, the man said
“You wouldn’t believe me if I told you” and with that the man vanished round the corner.
Just a Prototype;
The following morning after the encounter was like every other day, Will got out of bed and into his wheelchair and headed to the canteen for breakfast. As he got towards the doors the handicap door button wasn’t working, a voice from behind him said here let me help. As Will turned around he saw her, a beautiful blonde haired girl wearing a pink top. The two of them entered the canteen and ended up sharing a table to have breakfast, where Will learned that her name is Catherine and that she is here looking after her little sister Sophie who has cancer. Will and Catherine exchanged numbers and they went separate ways due to needing to go to separate parts of the hospital. While he was in the middle of his physiotherapy a pain surged through his body and caused him to fall. When two nurses helped him to his feet and back to the metal support bars, he started walking stronger and began walking without support. Ever since this happened Will had been allowed to go for walks through the hotel and continued to have breakfast with Catherine and eventually Sophie joined them.
The day came three weeks later when Will would be discharged and he decided to go back home to England and visit his family. He ran to try and catch a bus to the airport and as he was running he began to feel light headed and his sight began to blur. When he stopped running he found himself in the middle of Tokyo and quickly went into an alley to try and figure out what happened. He came to the conclusion that he must be dreaming and thought if this is a dream all he has to do is run and he’ll magically be at his family home in England. So he started to run and once again he became light headed and his sight blurred, when he stopped just like he had said he was home. He knocked on the door and his mother Maria opened the door and ran out to hug him. While hugging his mum he says to her “It’s a shame this is a dream cause I really want to be home. As he says this his brother Michael, younger sister Sarah and father Richard step out and join in on a family hug. When the hug is over his mother says to him that he must be tired from a long flight because this isn’t a dream. Shocked at what he heard, he made his way up the stairs and into the bathroom and fills the sink with water and splashes his face. While splashing his face he gets a strange feeling come across his body and when he sees himself in the mirror a robotic suit was forming itself on top of him. A voice says “Congrats, hope you like the suit just don’t break it you only have one. Oh and your a superhero now, this is only a prototype but I’m sure you’ll be able to do great things”
Realising that the voice was a recording he realised that the voice sounded a lot like his father but it wasn’t. From then on William Payne was the hyperspeed hero Prototype.
After fully understanding his powers and abilities, Prototype would later be found by other heroes around the world and invited to join a group called The World Legion. Gradually over time, as Prototype became stronger, so did his suits and when he was attacked the suit saved his life and unlocked a new power to manipulate technology.
