all i can say use color correction in PS adjustments Auto levels, sharpen edges and play with gaussian blur. Sometimes bring down the saturation a bit on the finished picture.

Thanks, great tips. Haven't used any of those yet. Mostly I crop and add borders since that's about all I know how to do. I thought that if the camera blew out the color (white and red mostly) that it was unsalvageable so I tried taking darker pictures but then couldn't make them pop when I brightened them. I guess it just means I need to read and experiment more with it.
