I would love to see her get a redemption arc in the show. Hell, I got a concept for it already: RD says hi to some little kid who cheers at a Wonderbolt show, who turns out to be Lightning Dust's sister/brother/cousin/nephew/niece. We have a comedic face making Γ‘ la the Gilda/RD reuinion in Griffonstone, and RD has to leave with the team. She's a bit hesitant, but hey, Gilda turned out to be cool, and Twilight got together with her old friends, she should give Lightning a chance. Hijinks ensues

Maybe they'll do a counterpart to "Magic Duel" with Rainbow Dash and Lightning Dust in Season 5. Just to have the same kind of result (Dash pulling Lightning Dust out of villainy the same way Twilight did with Trixie).

There was supposedly a deleted alternate ending where Lightning Dust was merely demoted to wingpony and Rainbow Dash was made the leader in her place. They may have changed it to set Lightning Dust up as another Trixie in a future episode - a pony who goes too far seeking revenge then turns good when she realizes the consequences of her actions.
