Backstory:
It was nearly 6:30 am, and Darian had already been up for almost an hour. Nerves had denied him a good night’s sleep, and now his stomach was churning even more as the taxi pulled in front of One Black Cat. His brother had already been here for a month, but that didn’t make him any less apprehensive. In fact, he was the one who had convinced Darian to come to the U.S. and take the position at the cattery as a new jockey, but he wasn’t sure he would get the job.
In the last few minutes before getting out of the car, Darian quickly re-tucked in his simple, dark blue, button down shirt and smoothed his black jeans. He was going to meet the head of the stables for a tour of the cattery as a kind of working interview, and he worried about the first impression he was going to give. He thanked the driver, paid, and stepped out onto the gravel driveway.
It was a brisk morning and the fog had yet to lift from the grounds, which were expansive and finely kept.
“Darian Kramer?” a female voice asked. The man turned around and saw a woman approaching him, she was about his height with short black hair and vibrant green eyes.
“Ms. Rineer?” he asked, she nodded, and he extended a hand, “Pleasure to meet you.” Darian hoped his palms weren’t sweaty as they exchanged pleasantries.
“Your brother has been very excited about having you here,” Jamie said, “And I know the barn is looking forward to having another jockey join the team.” She gestured for him to follow her as she walked towards the main offices and barn. “Unfortunately, Willa Rosen, the second in command, isn’t here today, so you’ll have to meet her another day.” Darian kept a professional demeanor and hid his awe as Jamie walked him through the main barns. The inner stalls and facilities were pristine and top of the line; there were few barns he had been to that were better than this.
Activity was minimal due to the early hour, but the people they passed greeted them with a friendly smile and hello. Darian crossed his fingers and hoped he would get the position, as it seemed like this would be the best place for him to launch his career.
“Generally, with new jockeys, the ‘interviewing’ process is a bit more involved,” Jamie said, leading him back outdoors. “Mostly because we want to see how people ride, how they’ll do with the cat, and so on.” Darian nodded in agreement,
“Understandable of course. I wasn’t sure how much you would like to do today, but I am willing to try whatever you would like me to do,” he responded. Jamie looked at him sideways, and nodded,
“Based on what I’ve heard from your brother, I have someone in mind for you. She’s one of our younger cats and hasn’t been on the track more than a handful of times. She’ll be a challenge in that she’s pretty green. Would you be up to it?” she asked him. He nodded,
“I would be honored to do so,” he responded. Jamie nodded,
“I figured as much. Your brother is her sibling’s jockey, so I’m confident you’ll do well with her. So I’m confident you will as well,” she turned down one of the paths and led him towards one of the fenced areas near the main barn. Jamie stepped up to the fence,
“This is Mig-31, one of the daughters from Elsevier’s Sukhoi and Superhornet. Both are great racers, so we have high hopes for her and Sergei, her brother.” Darian leaned against the railing and caught sight of the cat. She was facing away from them with her back towards the fence, but when she heard the two approach, she half turned her head to look back. Darian felt butterflies in his stomach; the sun had finally peeked over the horizon and threw an array of oranges and red across the morning sky. A fiery outline fringed the edge of the cat’s shoulder and side, making her patterned coat a darker shade of red and faint purple. Never before had Darian wanted a job so badly.

I love the story that went with this! The art and the writing are really beautiful. I love how you described the light hitting her shoulder and then captured that same feeling in the image.
