Description
Merry Yule!
"Yule is a winter festival associated with the winter solstice celebrated in northern Europe since ancient times. Its Christianized form is called "Christmas", which is essentially the symbolism and traditions of Yule with the Christian story of the birth of Jesus of Nazareth superimposed upon it. Yule traditions include decorating a fir or spruce tree, burning a Yule log, the hanging of mistletoe and holly, giving gifts, and general celebration and merriment.
In pre-Christian times, Germanic tribes celebrated Yule from late December to early January on a date determined by a lunar calendar. When Christianity was just beginning Christmas was set on the dates of Yule. During Christianization Yule was suppressed by the Christian Church, with many of the traditions being adapted to the new holiday. Thus, the terms "Yule" and "Christmas" are often used interchangeably, especially in Christmas carols."

It's a beautiful pic! And thanks for the bit about Yule. It horrifies me how many people actually think that Christmas is the original mid-winter holiday.

The colours were touched a bit, but only to make them closer to what I saw with my own eyes (not through the camera) on that day ... Thank you.

would have cropped the picture differently, so the frame didn't run through any of the berries, the shot is still great, but I am just commenting.... not wanting to inspire the wrath of Hamlet or anything

Ah, well - it would not have run through any of the berries, had this not been the entire picture. It's not cropped.
