Love the old structures and buildings seen here and the two people just sitting on the steps. Our eyes follow the steps up and onward as they travel off up into the unknown...for how long and how far is not known. It can be seen as a representation of the journey one takes in life. Climbing the "stairs" of life. The woman and boy seem to have taken a short rest on their journey. And really it is a brief pause; a moment in time in the span of a person's lifetime. Wonderful capture.

Volkan daha once de bi mesaj yazmistim bu fotograf icin ama sanirim gelmemis.

Muthis bir is cikartmissin.

Ohoo, i had missed this DD. I must say it's really deserved, the tones are excellent, and the scene is...well, actually, looking at it, it's something one could see in many places in the world. But there's something, in it, that makes it unreal. Surreal, almost.

wait i just don't understand this .... why do people think there is beauty in something there is not ... for example i do know you try to find the beauty in everything but ... if one goes to a 3rd world country and starts taking picture of extreamly poor and deprived people they will show these images of poverty and say wow this is beauty to its fullest .... i dream about places like that ........ but can you tell me one thing ..... would you be able to live in these "beautiful" places that don't have proper food or water or anything .... can you tell me where is the beauty in that .........

p.s. don't take this comment in a bad way i just want to know other peoples thoughts on this.....

IMO, beauty is not only related to the form. We are being conditioned every day with movies, fashion shows, commercials etc. to an aesthetics usually does not exist in our life in that way. That is a sanitary beauty which does not convey true feelings but lust and desire to consume.

This is about sharing a feeling.

I was born in a similar district in a small town and these are my people. It does not mean that I have to stop sharing something with them, stop understanding their ways because now I am an educated man and live in a modern house. Now I don't share the same troubles with them but we always find something to talk and smile about when we get together. The same day I took this picture, I met an 82-year old man on the same street and listened stories of his day. We laughed together and we shared a feeling together. Yes, they also talk about their troubles and I try to listen to them sincerely, trying to understand what they are up to.

For me, that's the beauty.

It is highly possible that they wouldn't say "this is beauty to the fullest" when they look at pictures like this. But you may well be suprised about what they'd find in them, how they'll interpret things in their own way, make you see what you are missing with your own perception. It is not necessary that we share the same interests, same understanding of aesthetics, same troubles but we can both empathize. That's beautiful in itself.

I quite agree with you.

Beauty and poverty, or hard living conditions are two different things.

It would make no sense to refuse to see beauty where it is, and it can be everywhere, in the light coming through the leaves, in a smile, even in a decayed house that looks like a grandma... or whatsoever.

It would also make no sense to blind oneself to the hardships exeprienced by others, and the worst would be not willing to fight these hardships just because you want to preserve "beauty".

But why should we refuse to appreciate what other people find beautiful just because we are more priviledged and ashamed ?

(Sorry for jumoing in the thread like that, but I came to your picture, and starting to look at the comments...)

Thank you! He should also get a camera and wander into the narrow streets of Balat. It's absolutely safe and weekends are better because all the children will be playing in the streets.

He actually just sent some pictures today off of his digital camera. They were of his muslim turkish girlfriend (he's an agnostic american) on a ferry. I'm not sure of the location, though. The site, as well as her profile, was rather breathtaking.

I don't think he often gets a chance to visit much. He's teaching/doing research at one University, and getting his doctorate at another, all the way on the opposite side of Istanbul. (Not sure which schools) So, most of his time is spent commuting in traffic and in the physics lab. ^_^

I wish I could talk him into spending one day a month just photographing, though! I will refer him to the streets of Balat. Maybe that will spark an interest for him.

The expression on the grandmothers face as she rests and waits for the boy to finish his ice cream is wonderful.
