Sorry if that's weird or harsh but it takes all the wind out of my sails when people put their art down, especially when they say it to me as if it's some kind of complimentDoes anyone ever take that as a compliment?Β

yeah thankfully one person in particular's been improving lately both esteem wise and art wise but i still get nervous when they tell me to criticize their art because i'm nervous i'll make them depressed or upset again

Oh that's good! You can criticise art in a way that doesn't come mean or harsh if that's where the anxiety comes from. If they ask you to give them advice about their art and you say like "oh I like this! I really like what you did here and etc etc. I think maybe you could work on [thing] but for the most part it's very solid, etc." and they take it harshly it's not your fault, that's the nicest way you can say "you can work on this area" if they wanted an outsider's perspective on what they should improve on.Β
To summarise my weird wording (because I kinda feel like my speech is really bad and hard to understand pfft) they will be happy to hear your take and your advice if they ask for it. I understand bad mindsets and going through things but it's a bit odd to ask for advice and be upset when someone gives it to you

Instead of saying someone's art is better than yours or anything along those lines, taking it as inspiration/motivation/whatever is a lot better and a much nicer way to compliment someone Putting yourself down won't get you anywhere :/
