Description
Inspired by the work of Micromite.Everyone was out of the station and Officer Jay Bauman was alone, manning the booking desk and bored out of his mind. So when a large box arrived he was the only one there to sign for it. It was large, but not heavy. Bored as he was Jay decided to throw and catch it as he carried it to the Captain's office. For a bit of variety he gave the box a spin as he threw it up, but too much, it flew off the the right, hit the wall then the floor. It split open and a piece of paper fell out. 'Damn' he thought as he gave it a gentle poke with his foot. 'I'll just say it arrived like this.', he'd certainly seen couriers do worse. Grabbing the box and scooping up the loose piece of paper he continued to the captains office and idly glanced at the paper. He froze and dropped the box. He couldn't believe what he was reading, they were instructions for something unbelievable. He crouched over the box and pulled the back the cardboard where it had split and peered in, his eyes widened. To hell with it he thought and ripped it open.
Inside were half a dozen large police action figures and they all looked like him; they were really quite realistic and the eyes had almost looked like they were following you. With a sick feeling he grabbed the instructions and followed them. Striding past the cell he went down into the basement to the always locked storage room. 'Used for old crap we tell the council we recycled' he'd been told. 'Nuthin' worth spit.' he'd been reminded.
Crouching before the lock he carefully picked it, making sure to leave no tell tale scratches. Easing the door open he felt for the light switch and squinted in the sudden brightness. The room was empty except for a shelf with some empty blister packs scattered on it and a large machine. He walked to it slowly, there was something familiar about it. On one side a small bay large enough for one of the new toy figures, on the other side a larger bay, big enough for him to stand in. Between them two controls, one a lever that could be set towards the small bay or the large bay and a button that said 'Convert'.
He was still staring at it when a deep voice said 'Well, you're no good to me now. Get in the machine'. He turned to see his Captain's, muscular frame filling the doorway, a strange device in his hand. Jay stared at him,
'What is this? What's going on?!'. The Captain stepped forward, the strange device pointed at Jay's chest, he backed away his hands raised defensively.
'Cap, I don't know anything. What are you doing? I should go back up, no ones manning the desk.'
'Oh we're way past that. But at least your replacements arrived already.'
A loud click behind him made look back over his shoulder, some kind of pincer shot from the machine's large bay and grabbed him around the waist. It lifted him and retracted back taking him with it. Jay yelled and struggled as the bay door slid closed. He beat his fists against it, but he was trapped. He watched as the captain walked to the lever and yanked it towards the smaller bay, slamming his hand on the button. A flash of light and the trailing echo of Jays scream and that was it. The captain stepped over to the small bay and retrieved the newly deposited Officer Bauman action figure. It struggled in his hand until he held up the strange device and touched Jay's tiny chest; he froze. The captain straightened his contorted limbs out, pulled the empty blister pack off the shelf and placed the tiny immobile man in it. Jay's eyes gazed around franticly. The captain looked at him trapped in his plastic prison.
'If you're a good little toy I might make you a full size man again.' he put the pack back on the shelf, 'If you're lucky'.
As the captain turned off the light and relocked the door he resolved to not leave any of the new recruits in the station alone. Too darned nosy for their own good.
