Description
Originally, I thought this incarnation was The Valeyard...but 'The Night of The Doctor' shown him to be something very different. A version of this can be seen on the #SaveTheDay website -Β www.doctorwhosavetheday.com/#/β¦
August 2014 UPDATE: The TARDISes used in this image were rendered by Andrew Orton (andrew-orton.deviantart.com/)
The only question I have now is - what ever did happen to The Valeyard? Surely, the Doctor's darker self didn't just run off and not mess things up...

I have a theory that the War Doctor was the face following the Eighth Doctor after crashing and "dying" in "The Night Of The Doctor". And when the Sisterhood revived him and gave him the potion that'd turn him into a Warrior, they turned that following face into the War Doctor

"The Valeyard is an amalgamation of the Darker side of the Doctor'sΒ nature. Somewhere between his 12th & final incarnation."
Assuming that is true, we now have an entire regeneration cycle (sans Capaldi) to have the Valeyard.

Given that a Time Lord regenerates 12 times (giving us 13 faces), having an incarnation 'between his 12th and final'always confused me. Did the Master somehow know that the Doctor would be given a 2nd regeneration cycle, or did he mean that the Valeyard was one of a number of possible outcomes of the Doctor's regeneration from his 12th to 13th body, like a sinister presence...
When I put this picture together, I originally thought the John Hurt Doctor was a the Valeyard but a calmer version after having seen the horrors of the time war. However, when it was revealed that the War Doctor was a completely different incarnation, I created an updated wallpaper, replacing the original (which I didn't think was great).
I think that the character of the Valeyard is one of the biggest missed opportunities in the show's history...

I don't think the Valeyard was the Doctor in the 'original' ending of the Trial of a Time Lord. Remember all that controversy with Eric Saward? Pressed for time, they went with the most over the top twist they could think of.
The new series hasn't approached the Valeyard, but I imagine that given how big an opportunity he is they are at least somewhat afraid of messing it up.
So yes, the Valeyard is a huge opportunity which will probably be missed.

I really don't count this as the actual 'ninth incarnation' of the Time Lord known as the Doctor. I know BBC probably does (sort of), and I think it's much like Stephanie Brown's time as Robin. DC counts her as the fourth, I count her as a substitute and not part of the proper count (thus Damian is the Fourth Robin*). Same here, the way the regeneration was induced; with the help of Karn medicine, leaves me to consider it more like 8.5 rather than 9. And we all know the Doctor's going past 13 incarnations anyways, so what does it matter?
*I intentionally wrote that as a reference to Doctor naming convention

I'm not quite sure how to count this Doctor.
This is what Moff: saysΒ www.mirror.co.uk/tv/tv-news/doβ¦
Don't quite buy it myself but...

I'm aware of that part. But Moffat is really just dodging the question. Time Lords have 13 incarnations (stated in The Deadly Assassin and the TV movie, among other places, despite what RTD tried to say). Their bodies naturally produce and contain energy for twelve regenerations (complete regenerations). But the War Doctor wasn't born from one of those, he was born from an extra boost from medicine. So in my mind that sort of invalidates him as a part of that Time Lord's natural count of thirteen. And the fact he's officially called an anomaly kinda adds to my point. The ninth incarnation of that Theta Sigma (since that would be a nickname which would apply to all incarnations) is the Ninth Doctor. The War Doctor is an in-between incarnation. 8.5.
At least that's how I take it. Doesn't seem like Moffat is interested in stifling interpretation.

Most likely the Doctor has done actions after meeting him that prevent the Valeyard coming to be as he would be whats between matt and peter C.

Fair point, though the way I understood it, the Valeyard was called into existence by the Time Lords in order to stitch the Doctor up. There is a Big Β Finish audio that might sort things up...

As in the Doctor's actual name? Name of the actor(s)?
If you mean the former, he calls himself (in all incarnations) the Doctor, his nickname at University was Theta Sigma, and if he is pressed for a name (mainly on Earth), he calls himself Doctor John Smith. As to the Doctor's actual name, we do not know, however given that River knows it, and Clara once knew found it in a book, he does have one. Hopefully, we never know.

He also carried the name Doctor Von Wherhen (german for Doctor Who) or was miscalled doctor foreman. I meant the name of the big finish audio story.

God, this would be so perfect, but the writers aren't exactly huge on making references to the old series that will actually impact the plot. I've never understood why though, most DW fans are so well versed in the lore that they would welcome this kind of thing. Although, wasnt there some kind of recent mention of the valeyard in the show? I don't know, I seem to recall being very excited about hearing his name.

Considering that the Valeyard is the Doctor's dark self, for him to simply disappear seems very un-Doctor, so I can only hope that the "Hurt" Doctor is the Valeyard because it would make perfect sense and be so epic, especially as the character hasn't been seen since 1986 (although he has appeared in 2 novels and an audio...).
My theory is that in a plot to destroy the Time Lords and the Daleks, the Valeyard started the time war BUT when it got out of hand, he became good and stopped it. Another thing about the 50th anniversary special episode is the long awaited return of the Zygons. Now, what sort of trouble could a shape-shifter cause? ;0)
