I think I was aiming for the swirly clock of the Capaldi Era (band name?) but salvaged it into a watery swirl (which is what stretched the render time A LOT).

Ah yeah, that old problem of high render times coupled with a crash at the end.  

I think I've got a few saved files where I've played about with particles effects, but my machine didn't want to know and subsequently, I'll never know either.

Word. It's because the swirl was reflecting and refracting all over the place.
Bad times about the renders that never were.
Your Daleks are really good. Mine are a bit deformed in the mid-section which I really tricky to do...but I am a complete amateur at 3D haha

Well, you can only improve from now on. I found 3D it a bit daunting to begin with, but plenty of practice and my 'Who' obsession helped. I think I've got a model 'Dalek plan' I found online that described the mid-section;   dalektricity.wordpress.com/201…

Awesome, thank you very much. I was using plans from the Dalek Builders Guild but the failure of my midels is down to my experience at that point. I'll be re-visiting them and using the plan you've provided. Cheers
