Poor Mokuba has a lot of conflicted thoughts about his adopted father commiting suicide. On the one hand he feels guilty. If he hadn't sided with his brother, Gozaburo might not have jumped.
On the other hand, if he had chosen Gozaburo, the man would have ruined Seto's life.
All he wanted to do was protect his brother. He didn't think Gozaburo would do it.
The man was responsible for his own actions. But when you're a highly empathic kid like Mokuba, you feel certain things are your fault, even if you have no control over them.
It's okay, bb, you were only doing what you thought was right. 
And look, you protected your big bro. 
Here, Mokuba leaves flowers by Gozaburo's grave to try and make peace.

By the way, those fins you see sticking out of the water? They don't belong to sharks; they're dolphin fins. ((Dolphin brothers.))

I see a lot of thought in this.
I like the differences between the color used for the foreground ( present day ) and the colors used for the background ( the past ) . There is water and sunlight and hope in Mokuba's side, and darkness and emptiness in Gozaburo's side. Very nice.
You bring up some deep, dark stuff here that I hadn't really thought of before. Season 3 mentions this point in their lives as being Mokuba's worst memory and Kaiba says he regrets it, though he believes it was necessary. The episodes mostly focus on how they stopped being friends for a short while and does mention that Kaiba betrayed Mokuba, but it doesn't really give a lot of lip-service to what really went on here. Kaiba didn't share his intentions and plans with Mokuba because he thought in order to pull it off, Mokuba had to be completely innocent and unaware, which pretty much means Kaiba didn't trust him to keep the secret, so there's Strike 1. Then there's the part where he pretended to get mad at him and pushed him away and all that, so there's Strike 2. But the anime doesn't really bring up the fact that Kaiba wanted Gozaburo to die, but his death isn't really Kaiba's fault, it's Mokuba's fault, so he doesn't really have much guilt to worry about because it all got dumped on Mokuba. He basically forced his brother to prove his loyalty by killing a man. Kaiba knew Gozaburo would jump and that's what he wanted, but I don't think Mokuba knew. That's some pretty traumatic stuff. It's no wonder Mokuba is ridiculously loyal to him after all that and I honestly think even that was part of the way Kaiba manipulated him. "We killed a man together" is a pretty strong rope to control someone with, and while it was Kaiba's plan it was Mokuba's choice that ended the guy's life. That's got to be difficult to live with.
When I only heard bits and pieces of the backstory before seeing Season 3, I thought Kaiba pushed Gozaburo, lol. This is actually a lot more evil, to rob someone of their will to live rather than just taking their life, and to involve his brother in it as well. Gozaburo was mean but Kaiba is fucking wicked.

Indeed, Seto knew exactly what he was doing. Poor Mokuba was dragged along through no fault of his own. But he still feels guilty because it /was/ his choice to stand by his brother. Leading to Gozaburo's suicide...
Seto is a true businessman with the cunning and coldness that is necessary. He truly cares about his brother but he also feels that in order to protect him, he has to make decisions like this, things that can hurt someone quite deeply. *huggles Mokie*
Thanks to you and Sora, you helped me see a less evil side to Gozaburo, so I can no longer hate him. It's amazing what seeing someone in 3 dimensions and trying to understand them and their motivations can do.

omg i can't believe we actually made you not hate gozaburo x'D that is amazing, cuz he may be the most hated character in all the show that only really weird psycho-type people would like ( like the kind of people who say yami marik is their fav character, people who like torture and rape and Saw movies and just... )
riku liked the concept of viewing gozaburo the same as kaiba, what if something happened that made him turn out this way, etc, and that's where that comic of him came from ( one of the least-faved pics in our gallery when we counted :'3 because of course it is, who cares about gozaburo!? xD ) i remember at the time, having ideas of like, what if someone just ran with this, made some really nice pics of young!gozaburo and focused on who he was as a person and not just "that guy who abused kaiba". of course people wouldn't be too interested because he's not a popular character ( and we only just now realized how important that is in the ygo circle :/ ) but it would just be a neat thing to run across, or at least i thought that at the time, that you'd likely never meet an actual gozaburo fan so it would be memorable ( especially back in the days when people RPed a lot, you'd normally never have a gozaburo player to interact with ) but these days pff :/ you're not likely to meet a fan of anything except a handful of specific popular characters :/
i'm happy to see people view characters as more than just "he's the bad guy so let's hate him" because antagonists serve such an important role in a story. nobody would feel sorry for kaiba without gozaburo. o3o

I agree that it isn't Mokuba's fault. Sometimes, adults do the weirdest things in order to get what they want, even going to pretty crazy levels that a normal person would think is too far. It makes sense he would protect his brother since he knows him the longest. Gozaburo may have helped them out of the orphanage, but personally, his actions didn't merit him the ability to do what he did to Seto. Hell, if I read the manga correctly, he even THREATHENED Seto to HURT Mokuba if he tried pulling any funny business. So, he loses more points there. However, as a person who also has high levels of empathy myself, I can see why he clings onto this. Maybe there are days where he wonders if he did something differently that they could get a better outcome.
If I were to talk to him about it, I would say besides the situation not being his fault, Gozaburo is a guy that is a man of his word. He may be mean, but he does fulfill his end of the bargain. He SAID he would jump, and if he DIDN'T want to die, he could have called the deal off and do something else. Adults can bend the rules if they wanted to, kinda how parents sometimes change their mind about things when things don't go their way.
On a lighter note, he did save his brother, which I think is a better move. Besides the fact they are brothers, the dub shows Seto protecting him while at the orphanage. Ultimately, he is his guardian; he protected him when no one did.
Regardless, it's very sweet of Mokuba to still send flowers to his late stepfather.
Sometimes bad stuff happens, but that doesn't mean you can't thank them for the lessons they taught you.
It's what makes Mokuba an admirable character.

(I thought the sharks were on purpose because I thought you were trying to show that even though Mokuba is living his best life, he has some thoughts about the suicide lurk around his mind, just like a shark lurks behind its prey. IF you don't mind me adding some feedback, you can always show the dolphin's backs with the hole at the top so you don't have to redraw everything. I know people say that you can just redraw the whole thing, which is fine, but if the problem isn't too big, then just fixing parts is fine. Sometimes, it's the little things that need a modification. That and I'm a bit on the lazy side. lol. HEY! Your irises are the same size! Improvement from the last art piece. )

I haven't read most of the manga, but I've heard of Gozaburo threatening to hurt Mokie to make Seto behave in fanfics.
What you said is true. Mokuba was far closer to Seto than to Gozaburo. He made the right choice standing by his brother and by doing so protected him from a far worse punishment.

Good point. I may have been subconsciously thinking about Mokuba being suicidal actually, as while I was drawing/colouring this I was listening to "The End of Evangelion." Mokuba might feel that he let his stepfather down with his actions, and wishes there could have been some different things he could have done to prevent his death.

I haven't read many fanfics with Gozaburo on it, but yeah, he was NOT a guy you wanted to mess with.
He was pretty messed up in the head to begin with.
It would be interesting to see someone write a fic about him and his life in more detail.
His character isn't developed much so the possibilities are endless.
Of course, Mokuba is basically Kaiba's national treasure: take him away from Seto, and he'll go after you like a dragon after it's gold.
Huh, that would be an interesting fic to read, and a lot more realistic if you ask me. Probably he can meet Noah again, and try to console with him his feelings since, in a way, Noah let him down due to outside circumstances beyond his reach.

i think i'd have done the dolphins jumping, or have their tails sticking out like they just now jumped back in, or like little silhouettes in the distance. i think u should never have to explain stuff about a pic so if it looks like something it's not, like fins are too commonly associated with sharks cuz dolphins don't swim that way, i'd just redraw it. if u ever have a feeling it'll be confusing, go with ur gut and change it
anywho tho the back of gozie's head is a bit flat but his face turned out great! he just needs a little bit more space behind his ear, and i used to make the exact same mistake D: i try to remember a human has the largest brain relative to body size of any animal, the head/skull is really big. but his face/expression is awesome!! spot on!
i think it could have used a gravestone to make it clear where he is/what the flowers are for, esp with gozaburo's name on it to show he's coming to HIS grave, not their parents
anyways, i like his glitter scarf, and the 2 different outfits to show past/present, and the colors and emotions, and the different take on their backstory

Another friend suggested to just modify the dolphins so I don't have to redraw the whole thing. (And trust me this pic was hell to finish - it took half of February to finally get done.) And possibly modify Goza's head too. (Stupid screenshots, cutting off the backs of people's heads so you don't have a ref for that and have to just guess. 
I suppose that's true. For this pic I wanted to focus on the characters and their elements. Mokuba with water, and Gozaburo with fire. (It could also be a metaphor for Moki being innocent - in heaven, and Gozaburo guilty - being in Hell.)
Going to his parents' graves was one other idea I had for this. I'd once visualized the other half of the pic had Seto and Moki visiting his parents' graves, but decided to scrap that and go for the original idea instead.
The glitter scarf was fun, but hard to make. RIP the rest of my glitter tape.

i study just basic normal anatomy, and only use screenshots for faces, hair and clothes. then when something is cut off u know what to do. that's also why if i know i'm gonna use a character a lot i try to get screenshots of every angle, at least full front, full back, 3/4 for each side/front/back, and left/right profile.
there was a grave or cemetery or memorial or whatever in a jp movie we watched and it looked totally different from a regular cemetery here in US so i wonder if they all look like or if that was just more of a memorial than a normal grave or what... i donno it looked like it could have been for like, people in the cities who don't have room for a full cemetery so they have like tiny cremation memorials or something. i donno how to even describe it x'D i had ideas once for yugi going to visit his parents' grave and kaiba happened to be there on the same day for his own parents, but i don't think we'll ever actually use that in any of our stories so i guess i don't need to worry about how to draw a japanese cemetery lolol.
i do think yugi's parents should just be dead though. it's awkward how important his grandfather is but yet his parents never interact with him except for that one scene were his mom overheard him "talking to himself" that the english version cut. or at least i guess that's his mom. seriously why are there no scenes of them being proud of him for saving his grandfather or being the famous world champion or anything?? and same for the rest of them, they might as well not even be teenagers since they all do whatever they want whenever they feel like it, never need permission or mention sneaking out to do this stuff, getting in trouble, family being worried, just nothing. just a scene of jounouchi being awkward around his mom because of the divorce for a few seconds.
as an adult i don't WANT to see a lot of stuff about how young they are but i wish they could just officially be college kids lol. ther'es no point having them so young since they never address any issues a teenager would have except bullies, except for the fact that's the target audience so they need to be the age of the audience so people can relate to them. which i did back when i was 16 ee;... kaiba was like the ultimate teen fantasy of getting to have ur own place/everything with no parents to worry about and so on lol. but it doesn't really MATTER that he has no parents since neither does anyone else! never once did they do the old thing of "character's parents rush over to say how worried sick they've been, character who is an orphan looks on from a distance" kind of scene.
