Description
EDIT: This picture used to look fine to me. Till I got a new monitor, and now suddenly...SMUDGES.
SMUDGES EVERYWHERE.
I was feeling randomly inspired to draw a sci-fi space scene after looking through =extvia and *ANTIFAN-REAL 's galleries.
Listening to such massive quantities of Homeworld soundtrack music also played a part.
And since I hadn't made a Sci fi pic in awhile, I figured I'd give it a shot. ;D
Took me about 2.5 hours on GIMP.
I haven't ever really made any space-scapes like this before. So I hope it turned out alright.

Harvesting asteroids is hard and dangerous work. Here you can see a mining convoy splitting one of the larger asteroids into smaller sections so as to make it more manageable.
Splitting asteroids is what really makes the task dangerous. As large chunks of the asteroid can easily fly towards the fleet that is to process it. And such events are always disastrous.
To help compensate for this, massive thrusters are installed on the asteroid in strategic positions so as to keep the parts after being severed from each other from flying away from, or into the fleet.
Such a sight though is breathtaking as the explosives are detonated and the asteroid breaks apart.
Everything in, about, and the picture itself are © of me, =Vypor .

Vaccuum of space + fire = no.
Nice effect, though.
I can't really tell; is that big yellow thing on the far-left a star, or another explosion?

I know, my theory was that they used an oxygen explosive that would create a quick explosion, quickly being snuffed out however.
And it's a star yes, though it's far too bright to be such.

A high-explosive contained within a canister of compressed oxygen, perhaps?
That depends on how close to it you are.

Vypor In reply to Lavacoa [2009-04-08 12:30:13 +0000 UTC]
Precisely. ;D
Yeah, I tried to make it look star-ish. But I made it too big. :[

My thoughts exactly. Being close enough to the star for it to be that bright and big... you'd all be sucked into it.

I always wanted to try making my stuff look more realistic, but if it's cartoony, then perhaps that's my style.

GIMP is essentially a free somewhat equivalent art program to Photoshop.
It's the best free one out there right now, but switching over can be very confusing.

GIMP stands for Gnu Image Manipulation Program, and it's a free open-source program that does everything photoshop does.

Well, I'm not sure exactly what you were wanting to know.
Is it shading that you needed help with?
Cause I use a tablet, which allows me to use different pressure sensitivity. So I can get the sketchy look.
