That is actually an eastern palace in the back I think, the broken checkerboard is meant to be the idea that the players in the tournament are part of a game of unpredictable deadly chess.

It's an eastern palace I think I referenced. St.Pauls I just saw a couple weeks ago for first time in person, and Wow the architecture of it is beautiful.
