Nice job. I enjoy the fairly even exposure (the soft light on the summits of the peaks is particularly pleasing). Also, it appears there was minimal processing, which is always a definite plus. The colors are natural and pleasing, not gaudy. There are a couple of nagging things about this image though.
First is the sky. I believe the image would have considerably more impact with a more sharply defined and contrasty sky. The lovely pinks and oranges in the background look a bit washed out, which is unfortunate because it definitely has potential. There are three things you can do to sort the sky situation out:
*Use an ND8 or better grad filter. This will ensure even exposure across your whole image, and the introduction of contrast will most definitely bring out the colours in the clouds, which would improve the atmosphere quite a bit.
*Use a circular polariser. This technique requires a bit more care in its use - especially if you happen to be using a lens wider than 24mm. However, if applied correctly, you can achieve some pretty stunning colours.
*Use the gradient tool or a level adjustment in Photoshop. This could take a while to perfect (I'm still doing so myself, but a correctly used gradient tool can help salvage a blown sky).
*Bracket. Again, takes a long time to perfect, and the goal is to create an HDR effect that doesn't look cartoonish. HDR is a great way to handle a stubborn scene that doesn't quite agree with your camera's sensor.
The second problem is that my eyes are led out of the image. The focus point falls on the summit of the peak in the extreme left of the image. Unfortunately, this takes my attention away from the other 90% of the picture.
Overall though, good work at enduring the cold and providing us with a truly pastoral and majestic scene. With a couple technique changes this good shot can be a fantastic one.
Cheers and happy shooting,
Joe Boston
