They get so thick that they don't really close afterwards.

Well that's why they usually reprint the book with more text per page to decrease the thickness, then bind all the laminated pages in a large 3-Ring binder. It's easier to wash off that way.
... Then again, it's probably easier still to make it an E-book and read it on a waterproofed tablet.
