I'd love to move over there and learn some real painting, unfortunately I'm tethered to a wife and two kids.. I say unfortunately, but I love 'em really

We'll have to meet at a con one day when I can afford a flight over to your land of plenty!

You forget about them? Maybe that's because I'm normal and haven't started preaching about how to be a good parent and how expensive the shopping is at the moment? lol

Yeah I'd love to come over there again, and yep, I know the poor old country isn't the land of plenty anymore.. your government over the last 20 years has really screwed your country up the ass. Sad to see.

I tend to remember you have a wife most times. The buggers though, them wee blokes I keep forgetting about. I'll try and remember from now on. I'm sure they're cute like your wife no, hope they got her jeans.

As for the gubbahment... I almost want to rant. All I gotta say is Clinton just tickled the pickle, but did a decent 'job' as prez. Fuck the personal shit. Bush, that's where the apacolyptic fire began....

Life, honestly I'm about to drown, or just jump in util my lungs fill so I can float away...........

They aint got any of my genes the lucky kids! I'm their evil step father, cracking the whip and locking them in the cupboard under the stairs! lol

Just incase there are some weird uptight fuckers reading this.. THAT was a joke.

Gubbahments are all shit, ours fucks us up the ass at any opportunity, and doesn't even have the balls to tell us that we're bleeding internally.
Civilization is coming down! Raze the cities!

My lungs are always like that, I'm assuming not as bad as yours, but breathing is over rated anyway

whats your general skintone pallette for the composition, btw?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WadeFurlong In reply to Aberzheim [2010-02-20 02:42:00 +0000 UTC]

The overall composition is much more than this...
But...
Dunno man, you actually want my pallete choice colors on this section of it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Aberzheim In reply to WadeFurlong [2010-02-20 10:47:12 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, just on this section- Im intrigued by your colour decisions- is it glazed on as yer working, or decided when ya mix your colours on the pallete?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WadeFurlong In reply to Aberzheim [2010-02-20 17:30:28 +0000 UTC]

Okay, let's see, I dug out my paint box to pull the colours.
Let's do this...

Keeping this in mind, I use more colors than I need to, but also far fewer than some other cats pertaining to skin tones. At time I use a bit of selected greens, but chose not to here.
Many times I my skin tones look far different than this, it all just depends pertaining to the demeanor of the piece at hand. Here are the coo-lours I had and applied for this section of the painting...

Titanium White
Flesh Tint
Naples Yellow
Yellow Ochre
Cadmium Orange
Cadmium Red
Permanent Alizarin Crimson
Magenta
Dioxazine Purple
Burnt Sienna
Raw Umber
French Ultramarine
Prussian Blue
Ivory Black

For *MY* overall pallet preferences there are a small handful of other colors I use of course. I find it key to have a broad range to get proper diverse values and proper saturation and chroma effect where needed.

Aberzheim In reply to WadeFurlong [2010-02-20 18:49:17 +0000 UTC]

kay, thanks for the protip
I tend to use a classically-influenced pallette, but my mixes ended up being too greyed-out and muddy by the final stages

only colour i dont have is the diox purple..that might help a bit for future works

WadeFurlong In reply to Aberzheim [2010-02-20 19:02:44 +0000 UTC]

Welcome.
Yeah, curious on yours. Note me, email me or something your typical overall, I'd be curious what other people like. wade furlong (at) gmail (dot) com - No spaces etc

I know a lot of people that have a very chromatic, fully saturated palette that is very colorful and they still have the muddy issue. Thing is you have to really take careful consideration into how much of what you put in when mixing, how much to mix period, glazing, small touching, mixing directly on surface etc etc. Many tricks, all just depends on ones style and pref.
Odd thing too, you'd be surprised... I've done several exercise studies in the past with others in a studio. You can actually get paintings that look 'colorful' with the simple dead pallet with 4-5 colors.
One exercise to try is using just Titanium White, Indian Red, Blue Black, Ivory black. Truly amazing some of the effects you can get....

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Aberzheim In reply to WadeFurlong [2010-02-20 23:24:40 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, the dead pallette can work wonders. Look at Andreas Zorn's work, and Velazquez's pieces- restrained palletes, but they are able to tease alot from it to great effect

I guess I'll post up some really recent paintings up soon to show that i havent been lazy with oils these past few months XD my pallete's the same as yours, except without Purple and with Viridian + Lemon Yellow (request from my lecturer to use more chromatic mixes)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WadeFurlong In reply to Aberzheim [2010-02-21 00:16:40 +0000 UTC]

Right on. Looking forward to seeing anew from you.
Cool on the palette. Viridian is key as well for me, one of the primes on mine. Rarely use Lemon, but truly a great vibrant color. Ran out and never resupplied... Do try that Dioxazine Purple. You'd be amazed and how well it can boot purity in skin color. Mixing it with Cad Orange and Tit White for transitions makes a really unique POPPER.

You sir get me in the mood. Glad there's someone around here to talk 'real shop' with.

Aberzheim In reply to WadeFurlong [2010-02-21 01:08:22 +0000 UTC]

no probs, brah- its all part and parcel of the art journey as well, i'suppose. arite, ill give yer diox+cads a try for future work

next up- brush talk XD
