Who else do we usually let close enough to hurt us?

Granted, we don't usually wind up with gouged eyeballs XD

Very true.

Poor Sandra, her elbow looks horrific, glad to see she's in good hands with Sam on board. It's a bit hard to decide of she looks so sad because of being immobile or hitting Sam in a panic. Of course, there's always the comments of Mark's uselessness, made earlier. Speak angrily in haste, repent quietly in leisure.

Sam's taking his injury with a lot of good humor. Like you mentioned in the latter pages of Chapter 4, he's lucky Sandra couldn't get a running start when she hit him. I hope his vision isn't affected in the long run.

She's got a longitudinal 'green-stick' fracture on her Humerus that's been bleeding into the joint. She has a lot on her mind right now and I think the physical injury is the least of her troubles right now.

Sam takes a lot of stuff in good humor, he's hard to get down really. Sandra wasn't really trying to hit anything in her wild flailing, she just wanted to get hold of something solid really and poor Sam just kinda got in the way.

...and once again, "Wait and see"

Ouch, I remember studying the fractures and all the other neat and wonderful things bones can and can't take. She's extremely fortunate Fen are built like tanks, probably would have killed Sam or Mark. No argument from me, I think the mental anguish is a lot higher on the agenda than the physical injury. I do feel very sorry for her.

Oh yes, I understand, Sandra picked up where she left off (blind panic) when she revived. There's every good possibility she didn't even know Sam was there until he got her attention at the ladder well railing she had the death grip on. However, had there been gravity and she was lying on the deck, there's a very good chance she'd have done extreme damage to Sam's eyeball (as in rupturing it) or possibly a major skull fracture.

I know, I know...all together now..."You'll just have to wait and see."

The thought that maybe she deserves it makes it easier to deal with the pain I guess. Yup, like I said, about like getting hit by a car; She got away with a broken arm, the other two would've been seriously injured.

No, sorry Sandra, but I don't buy into the "I deserve this" line of thinking. Moping about doesn't solve the problem and I do hope she talks to Mark soon.

Heh heh heh, and yet that's where she is

I would say she is in the worst overall shape of the four of them.

That she is. Well, with Sam's good humor and gentle nudging, I'm sure she'll get up a deck soon enough.

Very true. The lessor physical damage, while a nuisance, won't be permanent. The mental anguish of self-incrimination and self-doubt are much, much worse. I get the impression she's torn up more about hurting Sam than trying to thank and apologize to Mark.

Discovering she's not Superwoman but just as flawed and fragile as the rest of us must have been a shock.

It always is, isn't it?

There's a lot going on in her head; she's internalized the whole thing. Her self-confidence is pretty well gone after that mess. That she's so accustomed to being an island isn't gonna help with that (it's been pretty much just her trying to handle everything ever since her dad died).

My concern for all of them, but especially Sandra, is growing. She does have way too much on her plate to even remotely try to deal with it on her own. It's going to take a huge effort of will to finally take the first step in opening up, but she'll begin to heal when she does.

ANGIE should be able to step back and analyze herself with computer logical efficiency.

Mark has taken his injuries as part of the job rescuing Sandra, he seems quite able to accept just about anything that happens to himself by his own actions.

Sam rolls with the punches better than anyone I've ever met, of all of them, he's going to come out of this with his smile intact.

...and I can't think of a spoiler-free way to respond

Sam hides a lot, but yeah, he really is a "go with the flow" kind of guy.

No problems, just expressing my concerns out loud.

I did have an oddball thought though. If our 3 flesh and blood crew members do get a nice long R&R after this, how could they take ANGIE with them? Download her into an I-Pad sort of thingy? I know I'd certainly figure out a way to bring her along, she's an integral part of the group.

That would be a HUGE problem... possibly bigger than you imagine and it does get addressed later in this chapter. I can't really say anything else for right now.

nomyai In reply to WafflesToo [2011-11-23 00:08:55 +0000 UTC]

I figured it would be, seeing as ANGIE pretty much IS the Morocco. Hopefully they'll be able to figure out a "convenient travel size" for her.

There's no "Pretty Much" about it, that is exactly right.

Of course, she did manage to live not one but two separate lives outside of the ship already so I'm sure they can work something out.
