Description I'm trying out the use of an actual background (rather than white) for my scrolls. I've placed the canvas on a bamboo scroll. If everyone likes it than I'll probably do the same with the other scrolls I've made. I'll probably put the originals in my scraps.

It says "Diligence, Success, Prosperity" in the 'sousho' style. In Japanese it would be read as "kinben seikou han'ei."
This scroll is the same as the one here ==> [link]

Let me know what you think.

Tools:
Photoshop

EDIT:
Daily Deviantion!! Awesome! This is my very first one. Thank you everyone!

Very nice, but I have to say I like the plain white one better... it has a cleaner look.

I agree to the white one being cleaner. I actually hope to actual hand-make a set of these...which would you prefer to see: the canvas framed on a white background or set on an actual bamboo scroll?

Hmm... if it were an actual bamboo scroll, that would be cool. I'd have to see the final result before I could say if it would be nicer than the plane white background, though. The texture of the bamboo (especially the un-real looking stuff) takes away from the simple beauty of the writing, in my humble opinion.

but again. I'd have to see the finished product to say for sure, I'm no artist.

I appreciate your input. You don't have to worry about me using anything fake.
Eventually I hope to get the product-line up and running (sounds professional, lol). I'll have a link on my profile, if you want to check back sometime.
Also if you have any words or phrases that you would like to see, let me know.

You did an excellent job. I wish you "Diligence, Success, Prosperity" in everythign you do. How did you manage to get it onto a scroll-style background?

lol, thank you!
how did i get it onto a scroll background? very carefully, lol. jk, it's a little complex.

this may not make much sense...
Using Photoshop - I did a motion blur of a noise-filtered background (creating the wood effect), added gradient effects at select intervals (so that it looked like multiple strips), and then drew the red strings. all of those pieces were placed as layers under the original canvas.

I hope that wasn't too confusing.

Thanks for the comment!

Interesting! You are truly a genius of Photoshop. And it wasn't too confusing- though I couldn't replicate it because I haven't worked in Photoshop enough.

oh, i'm definitely not a genius of it yet. but maybe one day, lol.
you can do, it just takes time to learn methods on how to create the effect you want.

Yep. I haven't worked with it nearly as long as you have, so I am still learning the workings and trappings of Photoshop. You seem to have learned a vast majority of it.

i may have learned the vast majority of the basics...as for the entire program, no where near. photoshop is really powerful. you could go as far to say that even the masters don't know all of photoshop.

Wow! I knew Photoshop was powerful, but that's crazy! I bet you'll become a 'master' of Photoshop one day ^^

I like It. Thouhg it seems odd to me at least that all of the sudden the lines don't connect. You know? there is like this unnatural break in it, it seems that their should be at least faint lines behind the letters conecting to the other side.

but then, Thats just me. XD all in all, its a very well done scroll. Whats it mean also?

Oh yeah, I almost forgot...I linked to the original piece in the description. I actually only uploaded this one to see what everyone thought about the bamboo scroll background. This [link] will explain the actual writing itself.

I can see what you're saying. One thing that most people don't know about writing "kanji" is that there is a strict order to the strokes. So with this style, I don't think it would look as good.
There is a style, however, that I what like to experiment with. It breaks a few normal rules of order, but it is much more fluid. It's all done with as few strokes as possible.
Example: this work would entail about 3 to 6 distinct strokes.
The only problem is that it is extremely hard to read (if at all) unless you know rules of that particular style.
I'll try to do one up someday.

I appreciate the comment/critique!!

Yea. Huh, Well, I Knew there was an order, But then again, im not Familiar with it. Seeing as how I've never done it or learned it (now i would LOVE to learn to write Kanji.

I sees i seess.

And you're welcome.
