Description I'm trying out the use of an actual background (rather than white) for my scrolls. I've placed the canvas on a bamboo scroll. If everyone likes it than I'll probably do the same with the other scrolls I've made. I'll probably put the originals in my scraps.

It says "Diligence, Success, Prosperity" in the 'sousho' style. In Japanese it would be read as "kinben seikou han'ei."
This scroll is the same as the one here ==> [link]

Let me know what you think.

Tools:
Photoshop

EDIT:
Daily Deviantion!! Awesome! This is my very first one. Thank you everyone!

Thanks!
What do you mean by "out-of-normal"?

cr0z3r In reply to wag2tails [2009-07-31 16:19:59 +0000 UTC]

maybe it's just me, but everytime I see some chinese fonts (or japanese, korean, etcc.. all those with a unique symbolism) they're quite similar.

a lot of persons who practice calligraphy always follow some kind of pattern. probably unconscious, but it takes their originality away. you don't.

and that's what mostly impressed me, you created something..

wag2tails In reply to cr0z3r [2009-08-04 16:34:06 +0000 UTC]

I can attest to that about general calligraphy. The reason why they tend to all look the same is because there are strict rules to traditional Japanese calligraphy (I'm probably breaking several). One's originality comes after many many years of practice and mastership, of which I haven't done.

Since I haven't had any formal training and I'm using a vastly different medium, my calligraphy turns out very different.

Thanks for the comment and compliment. To tell the truth I never thought about creating my own style...I just wanted it to look cool, lol. I'm happy that a personal style is apparent.

trust me, regardless the reason for this difference, you got it.

as you said: "there are strict rules to traditional Japanese calligraphy (I'm probably breaking several). One's originality comes after many many years of practice and mastership.."
thing is, in art there's no such thing as 'rules'.

wag2tails In reply to cr0z3r [2009-08-07 08:21:44 +0000 UTC]

that is so true! if everyone followed strict rules of art, there would be no progression (and definitely no originality).

thanks again for the comments

Aww, man... Your type of calligraphy is the kind I look upon with envy D: As of right now, I'm only good at the Roman alphabet, though I have done some kanji. No no, the point of this comment is to say that this scroll is gorgeous :3 You scripted the kanji yourself, correct? And then added the backgrounds in PhotoShop? *nods* It looks very good ^___^b Good job, and congrats on your Daily Deviation. That's how I found this deviation :3

I appreciate it! I hope you're not disappointed, but it was all done in Photoshop.
Mind you, I do hope to learn how to make real Japanese calligraphy one day.

SabakuNoHeeromai In reply to wag2tails [2009-07-31 03:09:39 +0000 UTC]

No no, it's alright D: However you can get it done with skill and beauty, right? Nonetheless, I still commend you for your hard word and your talent.

Good luck on your quest for Japanese calligraphy D: I would like to learn as well, I have an actual horsehair brush and India ink to create the characters with, but I haven't created anything worth while

I was wondering, if you have some time available, could I get your opinion on a couple pieces of my artwork? D: If you're not willing to, you don't have to. But I made these scrolls for the main characters of Beyblade with their Japanese names, with the calligraphy being done by hand and the backgrounds and stuff in PhotoShop. Will you let me know what you think? Thank you if you have time to look at them!!

...lucky...lol
yeah, i haven't even been outside of the U.S., much less venture over to Japan. I plan to change that, of course.

I did get a chance to take 2 and a half years of Japanese in college, and that was pretty fun. it also helped teach me several key rules about kanji and grammar that translate over to making scrolls.

sweetieamy [2009-07-29 21:24:08 +0000 UTC]

The concept is really neat but for some reason the bamboo background feels slightly distracting. I think it's because the canvas is nicely realistically textured and the bamboo bg is rendered digitally. If you could sharpen the bamboos a little, make the details less blurred then it would look a whole lot better. also, the flatness of the bamboo back doesn't bring it out. ^^"
I'm just trying to help >_< don't bite me plz
i like though ?

Lol, don't worry I won't bite. I'm glad you like it!
I'll definitely see what I can do about the background. Hadn't really thought about it, but that could be why it looks like the canvas is floating. Thanks for pointing that out.
If you have any saying/words you would like to see done like this let me know.

well, the font style is my own for the most part. but i observed several professional styles so that i knew normal tendencies of the more complex kanji.

wag2tails In reply to LeonsBlackValkyrie94 [2009-07-31 01:59:44 +0000 UTC]

I appreciate it!
To make the calligraphy digitally isn't too hard. You just have to imagine what it'd look like when written really fast and smooth.
Now doing it traditionally with a brush takes years of practice. It also has strict rules of stroke order and shorthand.
I'd really like to learn the traditional method one of these days.

i like it um this is kanji right it is chinese because i dont recognize the katakane hiragana scripture in tis so i asum its sousho from the chinese dialect right??

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

wag2tails In reply to kramirez0 [2009-07-31 01:52:13 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad you like it.
It is actually Japanese. It's written using kanji, instead of hiragana/hiragana. It would be read from left to right as "kinben seikou han'ei." I should've put that in the description (which I'll go ahead and do ).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kramirez0 In reply to wag2tails [2009-07-31 12:48:17 +0000 UTC]

lol yea i couldnt tel the distinction so i said chinese^^

wag2tails In reply to kramirez0 [2009-08-04 16:12:10 +0000 UTC]

No problem. I took Japanese language for 2 and half years and I still have a hard time telling if the writing is Japanese or Chinese. The only true way I can tell is if it has hiragana or katakana.

Well, my uncle has an Asian-themed office space, so for his birthday I made this. The words I chose are steps to what I believe would be a successful life. If you work hard (Diligence), you will succeed (Success), and a happy life will follow (Prosperity).
