Description So, over the past (almost) 25 years there has been a TON of Sonic the Hedgehog merchandise, from clothes, toys, bedsheets, even shot glasses, Sonic's face has been put on almost any kind of conceivable consumer good, but there is one aspect of the franchise that has received criminally little exposure, and that's the original cartoons from the 90's.  Some of the old merch from that time resembled the cartoon appearances (such as the McDonalds promo toys made for Sonic 3,) but since Resaurus made the first real Sonic action figure line based on Sonic Adventure it has all bee focused on the video games.  Even when they were packing issues of the comic in with the figures they didn't make any toys of the characters from the cartoon or comic series, which was a shame.  So I figured now that Sonic is having his 25th anniversary we are long overdue for a toy line based on that nostalgic old series.

If I could make these figures they would be roughly 1:12 scale, (making Sonic about 4 inches tall to the top of his spine) a common scale for adult collectors that Sonic almost never uses (I think the Resaurus figures and the Nendroid are the only ones.)  This is a concept for a theoretical wave 1, the next wave would have characters like Robotnik, Snively, a SWAT Bot, Uncle Chuck, Dulcey, and King Max; and still later Waves would include notable one shots like Naugus, Lupe, that cheetah robot, and I'd like to expand to the other cartoons so I could include Scratch, Grounder, Coconuts, Adventures Robotnik, Manik and Sonia, and even do these guys again but in their Comic book appearances, both pre and post Super Genesis Wave.  I would love to pitch this to Sega and see if they can get Tomy to make the line, or perhaps another company like NECA or Funko could take it on since they do nostalgic adult collector stuff like this.

So let's talk about the figures themselves, I drew these to resemble their original cartoon appearance as closely as possible, back then Sonic only had a single row of spines going down his head and back like a mowhawk, aside from that the proportions are shockingly almost identical to the nendroid (though I plan for better articulation.)  I also wanted to design the shoulders the way they're drawn in hopes of being able to include a backpack accessory, since he wore one in almost every episode.  Tails looks really small, but I scaled him as best as I could according to the reference image I used, and if Sonic is 4 inches tall, Tails would barely be 2 and a quarter inches.  The hip design for some of the characters would have to be different, Sonic, Tails, and Antoine can use the same basic pin disk design that the Jazwares figures used, but I think to preserve the look Sally, Bunnie, and Rotor would need ball joints, similar to series like Marvel Legends, Megabloks minifigures, and some of the World of Nintendo figures.  Rotor is of course the biggest figure in this Wave, ideally he'd stand just shy of 5 inches.

To see the images a little closer follow these links: and this is the reference I used:

I've already started collecting a one of a kind Archie Sonic toyline, but I'd be down for this as well

If we were to get them under different names, please let them be made by a company who would make these in a great quality.  Not like the horrible knock-offs I hear about.

knock offs are when a company takes someone else's molds and makes reproductions of the toys using cheaper materials or by simplifying the engineering.  That's different from making an unlicensed representation of a character with your own original molds.  To be fair, a manufacturer can make their own original molds but still produce crap, but that isn't technically a knock off.  (also, a knock-off CAN be high quality, though this is rare since knock offs usually skip out on things like QC.)

I would love to see the SatAM cast made into collectible action figures.  Sadly, the reason the characters exclusive to comics and cartoons will not be made is because Sega has ordered that only the more-known characters from video games and Sonic Boom be made into action figures, as we all know Sega treats the Archieverse as non-canon and a cancer.

that was a few years ago when Sega was riding high on the Generations hype on the 20th anniversary, now that the biggest release they've had in the past 2 years is Sonic Runner for mobile platforms I'm sure they'll be more open to ride the nostalgia train.  Even if they have to share some of the profit with DIC and Archie publications I'm sure they'd rather make some money rather than no money, it's simple economics.  If they still refuse, then screw them we can do it ourselves, they may have the names trademarked but you can't copyright a style or look, just like with 3rd party transformers or Cerebral (the famous "Not Kraang" to go with the Ninja Turtles) we could simply make these toys anyway and give them different names.  Adult collectors would be all to happy to go to big bad toy store and order the "Freedom Battlers" to go against their enemies from the "Robotman Metropolis."

tbf those names sound a bit to familiar and sega is very strict on copyrighting stuff so it might not work out as much as I want it to.Maybe these new 3rd party companies like tf dream factory or 4ever toys or wei jang can make these if it turns out I am wrong. There is one company that is making a heavy scratch dino from dotm into a mass sold figure.

"you can't copyright a style or look"

Unless you Ken Penders.

are you kidding?  Ken threw the style and look of the series out the window after lighting it on fire and shooting it in the head.  All he wanted were the trademarks to his character names back, which is SO stupid it's completely mind boggling.  To bring up an example of how his this can be done right, when the creators of Megaman did not like how capcom was treating the character they created Mighty Number 9 starring Beck.  A game that looks, plays, and stars a character that are very similar to Megaman, but weren't.  The fans know it's a spiritual Megaman and supported it (they gave like 3 million dollars to it on kickstarter securing it a release on all 3 of the consoles.)  Imagine if they acted like a bunch of petulant kids wanting to take their toys back and sued Capcom for custody of the character (in the process cancelling his appearances in other media such as the Megaman Comic and Smash Bros) only to totally redesign him to look like the original american box art and then not really do anything with it for 3 years.  I think the only reason Ken isn't the most hated person in comics right now is because he's just nowhere near as famous as he wishes he was.  (Though he did earn the title of most hated person in the Sonic fandom.)

Yah. you should look at his web sight so high and mighty. so much hate to. But the only exception to that rule is his characters. becuase he holds the right to all fan art vertions of them and we cant even do fan art of them according to what he says.

Amen to that.  The Freedom Fighters needs more love, especially from Sega, as I think Sally Acorn can work in a video game without being Sonic's girlfriend.

I would pay so much for that tails. Brownish orange tails from the tv shows look better then bright yellow that they use now. I know in sonic 2 he was yellow but there he was more orange then bright yellow they used in newer games like lost world.

I have a birthday cake topper from when I was 7 or 8, it's classic Sonic and Tails standing next to each other, but Tails is accurate to his look in the cartoon series, with smaller ears, darker orange fur, and 2 sets of tufts (one on his muzzle and the other on his cheeks)  I think I uploaded a picture to my gallery around the time Jazwares' classic Tails figure was released comparing them.

old classic tails was so cute. sad that tails had been replaced with modern classic tails

TECHNICALLY speaking "new" classic Tails is more accurate to the original japanese game cover artwork, "old" classic tails is the result of american artists taking a few liberties with the design back when more of it was open to interpretation.  Imagine if our modern concept of what Megaman was supposed to look like was based on HIS original american cover art.

nice designs and concepts but, as much as some fans would like it it's not what  tomy and more importantly kids would want. i can't really say how many average people now would honestly remember those series at all unless their family members took the time to show it to them. heck even i didn't really have a good memory of satam (i remember aosth, and sonic underground cause i use to watch them when i woke up for school.) episodes except for the intro until the series got completed on dvd (which took far too long to happen mind you.) in fact those series are as obscure as the ruby spears megaman and the donkey kong country series (all awesomely cheesy mind you.) besides that if they did do that you would almost be out of the job wouldn't you? and nobody wants that.(not to say it would stop you but, it would kinda defeat the purpose of your commissions especially since if i recall you really don't like to make things that are already coming out soon.)

NECA regularly makes variants of characters from obscure NES and SNES titles (such as NES Jason and Robocop, even the NES Gremlin)  There is an ENTIRE LINE of "Re-Action" figures that make characters not only from obscure old movies, but in the style of the old kenner toys with their 5 points of articulation.  You can find pop vinyls of everything from the Breakfast Club to the 5th Element to freaking SAVED BY THE BELL (and yes, there have been pop vinyls of Sonic, but only him, Tails, and Knuckles.)  There IS a market for this toy line, and no, it is NOT necessarily kids.  Though DIC could help out by re-releasing the DVD set to stores when the toys hit shelves, so anyone too young to remember the cartoon will get to experience it and then want them.  If I can find an action figure series for god damn CLERKS then there has to be a market for SATAM Sonic toys, and I am DAMN sure there is a market for the Sonic the Hedgehog comic book, which is current AND popular to even kids.

Also, this wouldn't be putting me out of a job, I'm hoping to actually get a job in the toy business, not by just hand making craft items one at a time but by creating a toy line that will be mass produced and reach thousands of people!  Hell, if Sega won't bite I'd probably try to find a way to manufacture these things myself, maybe do the 3rd party transformer route and produce characters that everyone knows but under a different name.  "Hey guys, Sega never made that Sonic line you wanted?  Well why not get the Freedom Battlers!  With your favorite characters, Juice, Chipmunk Princess, Cyborg Rabbit, the Kitsune Kid, and the rest..."

well i never said there wasn't a fan base for it just probably not as big as those cult classic movies/ NES games. heck without contra were would we be without the infamous konami code. the scene that has the song don't you forget about me from breakfast club. and if we want to be technical half of those are because, they own the licensing to those franchise (the only ones i think they had to wait for were the batman and maybe the contra.) so of course they will use that to appeal to the fans of those series. now i'm not against it in any way but, i would be more inclined to believe they would make a nack, bean, bark, mighty, and ray before they EVER tried going for this version.(and even i find that weird to say.)

and, i consider the comics being their own niche. not doing bad at all since i saw some at my local shopping market so they are obviously doing well but, like the satam series only to those niche group of people. like the archie megaman comics. making people more aware and branching out from the games  but, not necessarily making big time tv commercials.

also being a toy designer sounds awesome. i always envy those who can do things like that with their hands so more power to ya and i hope that works out whenever it happens.
