The horses shuffled nervously in the corral. They pressed tightly against one another on the farthest side from the group of prospective buyers. Trainers peered through the metal bars and observed the horses who blinked back with equal curiosity. The trainers discussed the horse's physical traits openly with each other and murmured about their personalities as some horses hid behind their neighbor and others stepped forward bravely. They watched as ears pinned back or pricked forward. They watched how the horse's responded to each other. Each trainer analyzing the horses in their own unique way and coming to their own conclusions.

Dax Campbell leaned on the 4 rail, silver corral fence. His arms were crossed, and he rested his chin on them. His eyes were shaded under the brim of his cowboy hat, but they still squinted as he glared into the corral at the nervous horses. Another auction. Another horse. Another long training period. He sighed and tipped his hat back to rub forehead. Jamming his hat back into place, he cleared his throat. Several horses' ears pricked up at the sound and ears swiveled in his direction.

Dax peering into the 3 sets of brown eyes that examined him. A horse was a horse to him. He didn't care for personalities. He had very few specifications and requirements for prospects: sound, solid, size-able, and stallion. A buckskin and two bays presented themselves as good prospects. The bay in the middle was considerably shorter than the other two horses, so he automatically ruled it out. And the buckskin had too much chrome. He didn't like flashy horses. Dax's eyes settled on the bay with the smudge of a star. He grunted in consent as he made up his mind on which horse to go for.

The bay that Dax had selected was the first horse auctioned off. Dax bid silently with a firm, emotionless expression. There was nothing outstanding about the little horse. Nothing remarkable. He wasn't colorful or even particularly tall. In fact, he was possibly the plainest of every horse in the corral. "Sold!" was announced as the man with the mic pointed at the slouching figure with the cowboy hat jammed down over his head. "You bought yourself a solid little lady." Dax's squinted eyes shot open and his expression faltered. Lady?!

"Er... 'scuse me," Dax said, clearing his throat as he approached the woman collecting payment for the horses.
"Number?" the woman asked, not lifting here eyes from the paper in front of her.
"Er... 31," the man muttered, jamming his hands down into his pockets. The woman told him the total price for the mare, his bid.
"Well... ya see, there's been a bit of a mistake," Dax chuckled softly. The woman sighed and looked up at him.
"And what might that mistake be?" she asked without amusement.
"I, er, thought it was a stud," Dax said with a chuckle.
"And?" the woman inquired.
"And I don't want no lady. I don't work well with the females," he replied, rubbing the back of his neck.
"I'm sorry, sir. But do you want the horse or not? If not, the next corral will be auctioned off tomorrow."
"I ain't gonna be here tomorrow. You got any left overs?" Dax sighed.
"No, sir. They were snatched up real quick," the woman replied. "Now, you want the horse or not?"
"Dammit," Dax cursed, grabbing his check book. "How much is it for the nag?" The woman repeated the total and Dax scrawled it on the check from Grand Finale Farm.
"Oh, you takin' her back to the USA?" the woman asked as she accepted the check.
"Hell no," Dax replied with a chuckle. "You can't ship no wild mustang 'cross the 'lantic ocean."
"She isn't a mustang," the woman shot back quickly. "She's a Kaimanawa."
"Eh. A horse is a horse," Dax shrugged. He took the ownership papers from the woman and headed out towards the holding area.

Passersby may have paused to take a gander at the middle-aged man as he doubled over and tried to get a peek between the back legs of the bay mare who glared at him warily and shifted nervously from the pressure of his eyes.
"Damn female!" the man growled as he straightened up. She blinked back silently. Seriously. "I don't take no shit," the man felt the need to explain to the mare. "I'll show you once. Twice if you're nice. But I ain't going over the same steps half a dozen times. Understand?" The little mare stared back at him and swished her tail stiffly. Dax grunted.

All those massive eyes staring at you; it's almost enough to make you feel self conscious xD Like we've shoved our noses where they don't belong! haha

Oh Dax, if only Richard had been buying the Kaimanawa instead of Cris, he'd have swapped in a heartbeat, he's got a soft spot for mares.

Lol, you're the third person I've seen doing the "Storyline: You are here" list I may have started something...XD

This is gorgeous - I love the collection of faces and all their markings look so distinctive. You're tons better at face on horse anatomy than me - they look great!

Love the story too - I feel sorry for Dax, thinking he was getting a Stallion.

It's a genius idea. It's neat. And well ordered. LOL I'm OCD. xD

Thank you very much! ^^

Eh... Dax is spoiled. xD He can handle it. LOL (Hopefully!)

Hopefully it'll be really interesting! Next picture if my "Mishap" picture. Definitely starting off on the wrong foot. LOL Then I've got all my extras to do and training and storyline building.

Your mishap picture should be good, then I'm holding off on mine for a bit, because Kiwi's settled now - she isn't likely to have a freak out until she's pushed a bit more, and things are slow at the minute. I'm definitely having fun with the story, though

Well... my mare isn't on the trailer yet.

Yes! Story has been fun. Trying to keep it short so my watchers will read.

That should prove fun

I always start it, intending to keep it brief, but my characters tend to yell in my ear, so it never works out that way. Some of my watchers have been great and read them, though ^^
