Dax tightened the cinch of the fleece bareback pad around the little mare's gut. The horse responded with a grunt and glanced back at him as if to say, "Can we please just get this over with?" Dax obliged her silent request and began to lean gentle onto the narrow, boney back of the little brown horse. She moved her feet to accommodate the weight, and her ears flicker backwards as she warily adjusted to her limp passenger. The middle aged man grunted as he doubled over the mare's back, gripping a clump of her dredlocked mane in his fist with the reins. Suzy snorted and lifted her head as the full weight of the man eased onto her back. She took a step forward uneasily but froze when she felt the pressure of the bit increase on her mouth.
"Atta girl," Dax exhaled as he reached out slowly and rubbed her shoulder. He patted her tense neck and rubbed it until she relaxed and began to gentle chew her bit while she licked her lips. "You've come real far this week," Dax went on as he slid off her back. "If you didn't look like the half-drowned rat that you do, I'd say you're just as domesticated as any other horse." The man thought back to their oddly fast and strangely successful training over the past week. Halter? No problem. Leading? Practically a professional. Groundwork? A natural. Bridle and bit? As if it were nothing. Saddle and a tight girth? Not even a blink. Dax leading over the mare's back again. This time the little horse immediately lowered her head into a relaxed position and licked her lips before twisting her head around to glance at the lump doubled over her spine. She sighed patiently and glanced at the rail of the corral where the western saddle she had worn so many times already was sitting. Dax followed her eye and chuckled.
"Skip the pad and go straight for the saddle, eh?" he asked, sliding off her back and rubbing the crest of her toneless neck. The little mare snorted and extended her nose towards the leathery contraption on the fence.
"You got it missy," Dax chuckled, undoing the cinch of the bareback pad and letting the green fleece fall to the grass. He lifted the saddle off the fence, tossed the scratchy saddle pad over the mare's boney back and then lowered the saddle down on top of it. The mare didn't move a muscle while Dax tightly cinched the girth around her narrow ribcage. Collecting the reins above the mare's protruding withers, Dax edged his toe into the stirrup and looked back at the mare.
"Well... here goes."

"You got it missy," Dax chuckled, undoing the cinch of the bareback pad and letting the green fleece fall to the grass. He lifted the saddle off the fence, tossed the scratchy saddle pad over the mare's boney back and then lowered the saddle down on top of it. The mare didn't move a muscle while Dax tightly cinched the girth around her narrow ribcage. Collecting the reins above the mare's protruding withers, Dax edged his toe into the stirrup and looked back at the mare.
"Well... here goes."
