Ah, okay, thats possible that the english-people means with novel something other as the german ones. I m not sure but I think, that the word roman means in french the same as in german: a long, epic, fictional story...
A novel means in german just a short story - like the storys of washiongton irving or edgar allan poe
I ve just talked to my language-teacher in french about "Notre-Dame de Paris" and we also spoken about a roman.
