Description
I used complicated material effects to render model looking as if it was a picture from manga. The render is without any 2d postproduction.Static picture of the model:

Thanks much! I'll use it for Clare figure. Official Clare's figure has bad proportions.

I used 3ds max.
I said I'm not interested in *drawing* manga, I like reading good manga.

ok..is there a plug-in to make the the render look like a 2d manga drawing?

this is insane. I myself am taking 3d modeling and animation classes. I just started working on my own 3d model of Clare based on the miniature figure collectible for my final project in my Maya introductory modeling class. I also want to animate this character and later create a few other characters and attempt to recreate a fight scene or something from the anime.

May I ask what software you used?
I want to make a 3d spin like this using Adobe Flash.

I'm quite aware of how little the guide wouldn't be, but some hints on your process and shaders would be excellent this is really quite great, the model, the render, wow.

If I were to explain this, it wouldn't be a little guide - it is quite complicated to make a 3d model look like hand-drawn.

Though I do wish there was a little bit of antialiasing and a few more frames so it would look perfectly smooth. Also that the ground shadow wouldn't have that discernable square boundary.
Not that it makes the work any less cool, but I would like to see it PERFECT, and done with all sorts of different shots.
Hey actually, if you would be interested, maybe you'd like to do a collaboration, (I write some stories) we could do a simple anime together if you're interested. I really love this.

Walter-NEST In reply to thefarthestshore [2010-04-04 19:59:58 +0000 UTC]
The lines are anti-aliased and more than 12fps would IMO be overkill as it would increase file size with very little improvement in quality. I just can't see the shadow boundary - are you sure you aren't just imagining it?
Anyway - it's just not possible to make everything perfect. I have only so much time.
Can you tell me more about the possible collaboration?

thefarthestshore In reply to Walter-NEST [2010-04-07 18:49:27 +0000 UTC]
Yeah I'm positive I can see it, maybe your monitor isn't calibrated or isn't good enough to see those dots where it approaches the edge? Maybe try making your monitor darker or turning down the contrast temporarily to see if you can see it.
Yeah I do video professionally so 12 frames stands out as jerky to me but I suppose most people don't notice. And yeah, nothing can ever be perfect, especially if you're not getting wads of money thrown at you for perfecting it. lol.
Anyway, for collaboration I'm not sure exactly, I was thinking I would write a story and draw out rough story boards and then you could animate it and send it back to me and I'll do the audio and get some people to voice act and stuff.
How hard is it for you to make new shots and stuff? I mean now that you've nailed down how to do the B&W anime style is the hardest part creating the characters or is each new shot/angle or movement extremely difficult? Is reposing the body and making it move and doing camera angles and stuff pretty simple once the figure is created? Just trying to get an idea of what size/duration project might be realistic.

I did some animation testing a while ago...

I don't really like your idea of collaboration. It sounds like you would do the fun part and I would do the tedious part.
Besides, I'm working on a low-budget computer game and I already have more work than I can handle.

That link didn't seem to work.
Anyway, yeah that's fine, I've got too much on my plate too really, just thought I'd offer. I assumed you enjoyed the character creation and animating. Some people don't really have the nack for writing or the gear to do the audio stuff so might enjoy collaboration, but if those are the parts you would enjoy then obviously it wouldn't be such a good idea.
Well if you do anything more with the B&W manga animation stuff I'd love to see it.

there was a typo in the link [link]
I enjoy 3d modeling, but not animating.
If you can work with audio and could get some decent voice actors, you might be able to help me with the game. If you are interested send me a note.

I'm not a huge game fan in general so I'm not just inherently interested, I'd certainly be willing to take a look at what you need and what you'r doing etc. and see if it appeals to me and my time constraints.
What did you make this character in? More importantly what programs could be used to control it for animating? I'm curious if it's the king of thing that could just easily pop over into poser, after effects, and vue, and other programs or what. I know a lot of 3d stuff will, it all interests me but I've only dabbled in 3d and only for making scifi backgrounds to insert into video.
What kind of game are you making?

I think that you may have too high brightness/contrast setting on your computer screen.

This is fucking amazing. If there were a videogame done this way, in black and white manga render, I would buy the system just to play it. This is SOOO cool.

There is a game on PlayStation3 called Valkyria Chronicles, it achieved fairly convincing anime look.

Yeah, I don't know, I think it looks worse in color, I'd like to see a game that used 3-d renders for slightly more 2-d looking environments in black and white, like you've got here. It looks more comic like and less standard polygon game style.
