Description Phunaka Dzong. A dzong is a fortress-like structure that combines religious and administrative functions (in the past, also military). There are some twenty dzongs in Bhutan, all of them built in the 17th century.

I'm surprised it's in such an excellent shape, is it constantly renovated?

Yes, the dzongs are well maintained. They are not just historical buildings, they still serve their administrative and religious functions (and Bhutan's society is very religious).

Were these ever destroyed and reconstructed? Like because of war?
You can try using 16:9 aspect ratio here. I'd love to see a little more of the right side of the building.
Great pic c:

I don't think the dzongs were ever destroyed in any major war. I'm sure there must have been various events, fires, etc., but the dzongs have been in active use to this day and remain remarkably well maintained. They typically house a Buddhist temple/monastery, as well as the local district administration. I intend to post some more photos.
