Description
An upcoming character for the Burning Bridges nuzlocke.INTRODUCTION and RULES
FIRST PAGE
--
I hope she's recognisable as a Butterfree? ;;
This angry little lady is Rosie McCann, and you'll meet her in the Snuggly Psyduck soon - but that's all you're getting for now.*sprays spoiler-b-gone* and Also, I am proud to declare that she has the most outrageous pair of hips I have on any female character. Ever. :V She's named after this song: [link] and appeared as a doodle here all the way back in January!
"She is Rosie McCann from the banks of the Bann
She's the star of the County Down."
Someone mentioned that her original design was too similar to Donahue, so I went back and fixed her up. She's due to appear in the next couple of pages, so this is tentatively her final design. I'm not sure whether people will like her colour scheme and her anatomy, so her design's still barely under construction, and if anyone would like to lend a hand - the critiques box is open! c:

Very cute! Although, without knowing she's a pokemon I wouldn't have pegged her as a Butterfree. Or a bug type at all. Good design, but not if you want it to scream "butterfly". I'm also a little confused - are her wings actually wings, or are they detachable somehow? It looks almost like there are buttons on her shoulders in the one standing picture.
This is somewhat unrelated, but the first song I thought of was Whole Lotta Rosie by AC/DC... huh...

Oh! Those aren't buttons, they're actually her eyespots and just a cosmetic pattern on her wings (you can see another pair by the corners of her wings). Her wings don't attach to her shoulder like a cape, but they simply drape over them - they're proper wings that comes out from her back.
Now, THAT is an awesome song. c:

Oh, gotcha. That's really cool, actually; I've never seen a wing design that drapes over the shoulders like that.
It is indeed.

This is so fantastic. I love that she stands apart from what we normally see in Butterfree designs, and yes, she's quite recognizable. Positively beautiful.

I'm just wondering, but do you draw any of your pokemon as insects? Your renditions of beedrill, scyther and butterfree have very mammalian characteristics.

wanlingnic In reply to Imaage18 [2012-12-06 18:23:48 +0000 UTC]
That's a spot-on observation! c: Thank you!
Hmm, I do try to draw them as insects, but when they have to express emotions, it tends to get hard to draw them with a typical insect face - something tells me that's the reason why half the cast in James and the Giant Peach don't have very complex mouths, or maybe this is just me being a lazy artist. ;; Still, I prefer to give them human or mammalian facial features to help them emote better.
Rosie's face is kind of a truce between drawing a proper insect's face and me needing to draw her again and again in the comic as efficiently as possible. Her brother has mandibles along his jaw: [link] and pokemon like Paras coming up later on will have separate jaws: [link]

Imaage18 In reply to wanlingnic [2012-12-06 20:26:43 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I suppose insects' faces aren't really designed to show emotion, seeing as how they would usually do that through pheromones. One of the only instances of a mandible-mouthed character showing emotions well are the Turian species from Mass Effect.

Ohhh the body and the colours are working really well. I can tell she's a butterfree. Love the hips and thighs. I like how you sort of made them look like the designs on a bug's abdomen.
Can I suggest making her mouth look a bit more like a insect's though? I know it's a challenge trying to come up with an insect mouth that can look very expressive - I've got a sort of shrimp character that I struggled with. But when I started thinking about the mouth more like a beak things just sort of became easier. Then again...a butterfly's mouth is totally different but wheeeee! artistic licence.
Even if you decide to keep her face it still works really well though. It just might be fun experimenting with.
Can't wait to find out more... o3o

Goodness, thank you! c:
I have experimented with more insect-like mouths - Rosie's is the way it is because it's the easiest to draw in different positions, for the sake of speed when updating, and also since she's a very emotive character. But other pokemon will have slightly more insectoid mouths later on - like Paras: [link] and Rosie's brother will have mandibles: [link]
And, my GOD YES. Butterfly faces will be the end of me! D: I drew Subterfuze's Mecha with a proboscis [link] but it was really hard to make Rosie get the right expressions if she had one herself. Her nose is based on large print of a dragonfly's face that I own - I just adopted it as the standard bug nose in the comic. c:

Awww, thank you so much! I'm really proud of her face as it is now - she went through so many revisions to get to this current design. xD

she's gorgeous, and not a Donahue clone if she ever was one. Slimmer works better for butterflies and fems so I think this version does her justice.

Wow this is great how do you keep making things look so awesome. That said it been like year since you started this thing and forget the first badge your not even in Pewter City yet need to up the pacing of the comic a bit.

wanlingnic In reply to Jinholic [2012-12-06 16:13:12 +0000 UTC]
I'll try my best, then. c: Once we get to Pewter, we should be able to pick up the pace.
What's happening right now is that I need some time to introduce the cast and set up all the necessary foreshadowing for later. It's taking longer than I know you're used to, but I promise that if you're patient, it'll pay off incredibly later on.
