Description
1. Try a really soft, chunky wool - you might not even have to straighten it and you need to use less wool!
2. Tie your fluffs into the braid instead of around it to stop them from sliding down the base!
3. Try separating the wool strands before brushing to prevent knots.
Total time: ~5 hours+ depending on length

How did you finish the tail, like making it attachable to your pants? I have a carabeaner on mine right now and would rather have a pin-on or something but not sure how to go about doing that?

I was really surprsed by your tutorial.
So I stared to work on one tail yesterday.
kasusaikoro.tumblr.com/post/11β¦
Maybe it's because i only braided 3 strings or it's becaus I wand the tail to turn out nice and fluffy but I am not able zu find the core after i added the 'fur'.
it's really compact. That's nice!
I choose to pull one end ot the yarn through the braided core with a chrochetung needle (I hope everyone understands? english is not my mothertoung) and tie a knot around just one of the strings. with that they can't slide more than one tiny part of the braided core. Maybe this helps?

Nice! It would actually make a great ermine tail with the little black bit at the end... Also, your English is better than many U.S.-native folks. Sadly, most of us only speak/write our native language, and too many aren't even very good at that. Thanks for sharing!

By the way , you need to tie the floods closer together not into the braided core. Unless your wanting a thinner tail. Go to my page to see my first one.

Thanks sooooo much for taking the time to make this tutorial! I was able to make my first tail following this and it was easier and cheaper than I thought it would be. Still time consuming by far, but so worth it.

Make your "Floofs" really long, and tie a whole bunch of them in there! You can also "trim" the tail afterwards to make a nice pointy fox tail shape, after all the floofs are attached.

yeah thanks i'll try that btw none of the tutorials i have found mention that any type of yarn you use is going to shed alot i have tried several kinds and they all shed into the brush which at first made me think i had messed up but my friend told me that it is normal for that to happen so yeah would have been a good heads up before i went out and bought a but load of yarn im never gonna use -_-

Damn, that easy? Wow, and here I thought you had to buy fur or something. Wow, I bet you've heard this before but, THANKS! THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THIS TUTORIAL! I'm gonna put it to use asap. my wallet and fridge depends on it. Economy here is so bad, half of the population of my generation is jobless and cant afford to buy food with spare pocket change with out the help of food-stamps. Living like this is embarrassing. Again, thank you very much for being so considerate about other crafters like yourself.

Will send you a link as soon as I finish. I just started a tail but I need the cat brush. Mostly because my dog got rid of my last one but just as much for this tail. It's gonna be brown. I also did some extension variations to make it more poofy at the bottom. I'm also pitching my sowing abilities for making light winter wears such as fleece hoodies and hoods. Cosplay sets and more. Adding fluffy tails to the mix would be most helpful.

HiΒ Β Do you think it would be possible to put a metal wire in the base then braid over it and do you have any ideas on how to make the base a bit thicker without using yarn for it? I need a bigger and sturdier base for it since it's going to be standing up and bent into place. I'm planning to make tails for my Ahri cosplay soon.
π: 0 β©: 1
WarmSummerSun In reply to Kigenzen [2014-10-02 18:51:45 +0000 UTC]
I think you'll regret using this method for Ahri because it takes a very long time! I think that's a project much better suited for fake fur + sewing. If you decide to try it though, make sure you wrap the wire in something of a spiral pattern so that it doesn't just slip out the bottom of the braid. You could also make the braid out of strips of fabric instead of wool in order to make it thicker. Good luck

How many strands of tarn did you use for the core?
π: 0 β©: 1
WarmSummerSun In reply to LuckyLily3496 [2014-09-19 16:10:26 +0000 UTC]
9 for a thinner yarn, or you can get away with just 3 of a chunky yarn! It doesn't matter too much how thick the core is because the thickness of the tail really comes from the length of the fluffs

Little-Grump In reply to ??? [2014-09-11 19:08:32 +0000 UTC]
I recommend against using a a high wool yarn (more than 30%) because wool becomes matted (felts) acrylic yarn will never become matted, no matter what happens it will brush out rather easily.

π: 0 β©: 1
WarmSummerSun In reply to elytabby [2014-08-29 16:34:50 +0000 UTC]
I was checking out your OC, and I think you should be able to do a striped tail without much problem. Just do a few floofs of brown, all the way around the outside, then a few of white, etc. You'll have to experiment to see how many it takes to make the stripes the right thickness, but you can probably add in more if they look too skinny. Good luck!

Hello! First, thanks for the tutorial its really nice! Second, I was wondering if it matters that you don't put spaces between the knots on the core. I feel like it would be easier this way but I'm not sure it will work or not, i already started but Idk if it will turn out... Thanks!
π: 0 β©: 2
WarmSummerSun In reply to LillyLuvsLollipops [2014-07-18 19:46:08 +0000 UTC]
Hey! Glad this helped you out! The spacing between the floofs will depend on how fluffy you want your tail. The knots tend to settle down on top of eachother anyways in my experience, so it's probably better not to have a space to begin with. Good luck!
