Description
An art trade for *MrJRussell87He asked for his OCs Tetsuya and Yumiko, My OC L-chan, and Paul.
I'm really starting to like Corel right now. I may still be a little sloppy with the program since I'm still adjusting to it, but I like it. It's like painting with an undo button; what more could I possibly ask for?
Also, Paul is actually holding L-chan's hand in the picture, but both their hands are cut off, so you can't see them. Just so you know.
I really hope you like this
Mediums used: Corel Painters Essentials 4, Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 (for the lettering and smudge effect), tablet

I'm really glad you took the time to critique this ^^
Shading on Corel is actually a lot more complicated than another digital art program, like, say, Photoshop or Gimp; you need the EXACT shade to make it look right instead of just clicking the dodge or burn tool.
The biggest challenge was actually making Tetsuya's thumbs-up, so you're right about the hands
Also, what do you mean by this: "Also you dont messed up with anathomy details"? I understand this could be a typo, but...what exactly do you mean by this?

This deviation is exquisite. It's incredibly designed and welly functioned out. This deserves 5 stars for everything.
A well known piece of art to me on DeviantART is something like this. An incredible and artistic work of art.
You are a true artist, who doesn't need motivation to keep you going, all you need is an intent focous and a strong heart. This is what creativity looks like.
The fact that you created this work of art for a simple art trade is very unique. You deserve large amounts of cash for this piece. I hope other Deviants will respect what I have wrote, and will too say the same.
Congratulations on a job well done my friend.

Thanks so much for your kind words!
This art trade is actually for a very talented artist here, so I needed to make it as good as I possibly could...I think I kind of overdid it, though
And I WISH I could get cash for this!

It feels very wonky and bad overall
The lines are wobbly and jaggy in some parts and the anatomy is p. bad. Coloring could be leagues better too. I'll be explaining them in order.
First, the lines. It really looks you're drawing them without making a sketch first. While it can work sometimes, don't do that. Make stick figures to help define the shapes and posing, then you start fleshing it out. Lines also look better when you vary its width. Check out ink drawings, for example. The curves are made with a thicker line, giving it volume. You don't also make folds by making 'V's on the clothing: use some references and observe how clothes fold to help you.
Anatomy needs extra care, because you're pretty much guessing everything here, and it doesn't look good. The guy's hand is ugly and the third girl (from left to right)'s breasts are way too low. Shinji's face is all crammed in a small space, making him look handicapped. All those problems would be solved by sketching first (as I said before, sketching helps defining shapes and thus, proportions). I studying a little of anatomy. It doesn't even need to be from books; just observe people and see how their bodies look like when standing, walking, sitting etc.
Coloring (and by ext. shading) needs refinement. It looks very smudgy to the point it hurts your drawing. I don't know how to make digital drawings aside from pixelart but I suggest toning down on the smudge tool. Also pick better colors when painting; happy drawings are better colored with bright colors while serious ones are duller.
When shading, ask yourself "does this look 3D enough?". Shading is a way to convey tridimensionality in your drawing; thus if your drawing still feels flat, then something is wrong. First, fix a lightsource so you'll know what parts are shaded. After that, you'll need to think your drawing as a real object/person and start adding shading on it. Don't just make the base color darker and paint it in the left side of the outline.
If you observe enough, you'll see that shadows are never a perfect darker version of the base color; it's always a little different. That's what is called hue-shifting. I suggest looking for that; it's a hard think to explain, but it's actually easy to understand it
Nose, breasts, head etc. all make shadows in the face/body, so take those in account too. Again, making the body as simple shapes (cubes, spheres, cylinders) helps A LOT at this.
I hope I helped you. It's kinda stupid of dA to let only premium members to give critique. Common members can also help people too!

Does this mean my art is bad overall and I have to start all over from scratch?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Gorsal In reply to Warped-Dragonfly [2010-11-21 21:49:13 +0000 UTC]
Your art is lacking, yes. Starting from scratch may be interesting to you, considering that now you know about the tips I gave you.
Sometimes, in art, you need to redo your work several times until you get satisfied with it. Do not think on redoing as 'bad', but as an another opportunity to make it 'better'.
That critique might have been overwhelming and intimidating, but use it as a ladder to help you climb higher

Warped-Dragonfly In reply to Gorsal [2010-11-22 02:41:11 +0000 UTC]
I've actually been taking the whole "stick figure" thing into consideration for my next painting, actually. Thanks for that.
And no offense, but....your critique was a little harsh It's only going to be two years until I (hopefully) get into college, so I'm really trying to force myself to get better and better until I get to art school...or at least some sort of college.

Gorsal In reply to Warped-Dragonfly [2010-11-22 14:09:37 +0000 UTC]
If I sounded harsh, I'm sorry for that. I just don't like when people say it's the best thing on Earth when it clearly has flaws.
Just keep improving, and you'll be fine!
BTW, in my critique, when you see "I studying a little of anatomy...", read that as "I suggest studying a little of anatomy...".

Warped-Dragonfly In reply to Gorsal [2010-11-22 19:55:22 +0000 UTC]
I was very well aware it had flaws, but...if I explained every little flaw, it would turn into a giant rant ^^" I'm honestly just glad the person who traded with me liked it.
And that's fine. I didn't even notice it was a typo.
