Description READ THE COMMENT FOR A LITTLE EXPLANATION OF THE STEPS

Hi there mates.

This is about the last hand’s practice I posted some days ago.
People started to ask me how I do not to lose the proportions on them.
So I decided to do a little sketch of two position types. One I find easy to do and one I find hard to draw.

These are sketched on Painter IX with the Pencil tool.

1st step: since I sketched digitally I do a marking of the palm, then mark the place I’ll put the wrist and arm. And when I start working on the fingers I usually try to do forms that are closer to the finger’s bones shape. (I also tend to put little arrow-guides so I won’t forget where each finger is pointing to.)
Sometimes in the end of the sketch I don’t really know myself what I’m doing since it gets too messy.

2nd step: I do a little cleaning in another layer leaving only the parts of the hand I’m sure will appear in the drawing.
But sometimes if the first step is not that much confusing I tend to skip the second step.

3rd step: I do some tube shapes for the fingers. One for each part before their joints. Also do a little quick mark for the nails. (Oh... it is starting to look like something )

4th step: I finally sketch the hands. (I usually pay attention to the details on my own hands so I can make them look more natural.)

PS: The parts I put ? are the ones I want to remember myself where I should pay some attention in case I forget...

I hope these are helpful to you mates.
It’s not a tutorial.
It’s just the way I find easier to draw hands.

Good luck if you want to train using these. ^_~

See ya!

THANK YOU. I always avoid the hands because I'm absolute crap at drawing them; this tutorial is going to help a lot.

I usually start with step 2 or 3 directly and my hands looks like sh*t TAT I'll try this method from step 1 and see how it turns out (hands are haaaaard )

Thank you SO much for posting this. I've found that this method is working best for me when drawing hands, and I never would have though to try it if you hadnt posted it.
I'm drawing the best hands I have ever drawn now!

thanks for sharing... im defiantly going ot try it out. My biggest problem tho is with the palm of hand and drawing the thumb, do u have any suggestions on this as the thumbs arent very visible in these examples?

True. Hands are something I personally suck at, but when I draw I can never be arsed to draw guide lines/skeleton base. If I don't want it very symetrical that is.

I can't draw to save my life ... to compensate I laugh at other peoples drawings (Not in a bad/mean way I promise!)
My way of laughing at this ... the hand on the right looks like an awkward turtle hand sign!

do you use this 4-step process for every time you draw hands? it seems a bit lengthy just for hands...

It makes sense, I like it. Since hands and feet are the most difficult parts of the body to draw, there's never too much of instructions like this.

I like this, but I definitely don't draw the skeleton of the hand every time I draw hands. Usually I just wing it.

you draw Bleach fan art... That's a good practice, I'm sure ^w^ I'm starting to draw Rukia, and I think I will end up drawing some fan art, too...
anyway, sorry, that's not the point!
You make it look so easy X'D I like your steps very much, I think they're very usefull, even if I don't know if I'll ever get it that good... Surely not
Thanks for this amazing reference ^¬^

That's what I thought. I honestly believed this was a joke because the first step looks like an x-ray.
I never came across someone who draws hands like that.

Thank you - this is veeery helpful! ^-^

nikutsuki In reply to nana-fene [2011-09-30 16:23:01 +0000 UTC]

yep, that was my favourite way to avoid to have to draw them, too... I also used to hide the feet
but you should try and try a lot of times, even if it's not perfect at the first try That was how I started to fear them a little bit less XD
