Panel 1: Gotta love Yuuka. At least, you'll love her if your smart.
Panel 3: If Kaguya makes the the full moon eternal, I could see this particular nightmare going on forever.
Panel 4: Remember, it's always the quiet ones.
Panel 5: I've always believed that Ranma has to be as skilled as he is just to avoid dying before breakfast each day. Or during breakfast, if Akane is cooking.

Pity that Dai's screwed. Okuu's a GOD.

True. At least the worst Okuu can do is kill her. Being a fairy, that's like a slap on the wrist.

Okuu is technically the god of Gensokyo's hell, though. She could smite Dai.

Sooo, what? It would take her a lot longer to regenerate or would it kill her permanently?

My take on Touhou fairies is that they can't die because they, like the fairies from folklore, lack true souls. This doesn't make them evil or anything, just simpleminded and unable to tell right from wrong, which nicely fits with their characteristic stupidity and penchant for pranks.

The whole point behind a lich is that their souls are no longer present within their bodies, so it can't be released upon mortal injury. However, a lich's soul is still present on the material plane, just housed in their phylactery. In this way, a lich is still anchored to the world of the living even though they are technically "soulless".

Fairies are a step beyond that, having no soul at all. Instead, they are expressions of nature, like leaves on a tree. You can pluck the leaf from the tree, crush it, rip it up and burn it, but as long as the tree lives the leaf will simply grow back. Such is a fairy. They are technically alive, but when you get right down to it they're just a small part of a much larger organism. In order to truly kill a fairy, you'd have to destroy whatever part of nature they are connected to, which is a fair bit harder to do than simply smashing a phylactery.

In PoFV Komachi says that fairies lack lifespans. She also says that this state can be found in ghosts and, more importantly, in those who have yet to be born. Since fairies seem a bit too lively and corporeal to be dead, we must assume that their lack of lifespan has a different explanation, and the only other example we have is that they aren't born yet.

Now, remember my leaf analogy? Well, if you've ever heard of plant cutting, then you should know that it's possible to asexually clone a plant by cutting a sufficiently large part off and planting it. The cutting will then develop roots of it's own and grow into a new plant completely independent of the parent. While this is much more easily achieved through human intervention, it can also happen naturally, though it is quite rare since the conditions must be just right. Here's the kicker. What if fairies could do the same?

I thought it was strange that Shikieiki took such an interest in Cirno in PoFV. Why her? Why not any of the other fairies around her? And why did she make such a big deal about how powerful Cirno is?

Here's my theory. Cirno is developing a soul. Just like that metaphorical cutting, Cirno is becoming independent of the natural phenomenon that spawned and sustained her. Shikieiki wants to make sure that this new soul follows the right path, since gaining a soul means Cirno will become susceptible to death and therefore judgment.

honestly, I agree fully. Fairies are quite similar to the naeyads and maenads of Greek Myth

been reading about it since 5th grade. also, I've heard that if a fairy isn't strong enough, when it respawns it has to start over, it loses all memories.

Ahh, well in some mythologies fairies are actually soulless.

Mind-Fracture In reply to ultimadragon88 [2011-04-16 00:54:51 +0000 UTC]

Yes. They don't have an afterlife or can be reincarnated. They just kind of... exist. And while killing them is much much harder than killing a human, if they do die, then they just stop existing. No ghost, no afterlife, no nothing. Just oblivion.

But since in those mythologies they have no souls, those ones tend to be utter a8*hats that deserve that fate.

its kinda sad when you think about it. what happens if someone kills Cirno? Daiyousei? or even the fairy maids(Kuroi and Joy)?

Kuroi and Joy have souls, being transfigured humans.

Well, I suppose that all depends on just which mythology ZUN had in mind when he created Touhou fairies. To me, they seem to be an odd amalgam of different mythologies.

WatcherCCG In reply to Mind-Fracture [2011-04-11 03:02:13 +0000 UTC]

YES! This is EXACTLY why Kurisu is also focused on Cirno! While it's not trying into your analogy completely, this is much the reason he favors her. Except in Kurisu's case, he's certain Cirno is going to become a youkai. He thinks Cirno is the future for most, if not all of Gensokyo's fairies.

Why is Lily White with Yuuka and Wriggle? I also find it slightly out of character that Star Sapphire didn't duck out.

Lily's spring powers help Yuka's flowers come back to life after winter. Thus, the two would logically at least respect eachother, and probably be friends.

If you ever use Ranma again for anything, This is the right DNA 3.39:Ranma:100:0:215:197:171:25:0:0:0:0:0:141414 When KirbyM added the pigtail, the reference for it was a pic of Ranma-chan, so that IS Ranma's pigtail in Walfas.
