I was hoping to get more in on this but no one replied to the shout I made a few days back.Anyway, If the art wasn't obvious, I'm for the faction of The Minutemen.
They are the best by lore and the best choice by game.
Oxhorn already gave every reason, you can look him up on youtube, so I'll just sum up why in lore.
They legitimately care about people. They don't help people for money or because they are on their side, they are a militia doing this just because they care about saving lives.
On the side of just playing the game. They are the best.
Yeah, they start out weak, but, like the sole survivor, they get stronger, the more you work with them.
Get every settlement on your side, and you can use the flare gun to call for help throughout most of your gameplay. Build artillary at each settlement, and only the glowing sea can not be fully covered. To boot, you can level up fastest with them because you are given quests that get easier and easier, by helping out settlements that are in trouble.
Preston is a bit annoying, but you can leave him behind to help this faction destroy the Institute. I love these guys, there's no other faction I can join. ^^

That's the idea, and it's awesome. ^^ If only there were says to make the Minutemen you summon and encounter more powerful. I'd love to see some using hunting rifles or power armor.

No worries there. Even Preston likes that group. Helping Synths that just want to live a normal life, nothing wrong with that. ^^
