Description A Vickers F B 5 attacks a German observation balloon whilst the observer jumps to safety. The F B 5 was an an attempt to place a machine gun at the front of the aircraft before the invention of the interrupter gear, that allowed the machine-gun to shot through a spinning propeller by placing the engine at the back of the aircraft. These aircraft became known as 'pushers'. they would be made obsolete when the interrupter gear was invented. The Germans were using the interrupter as early as 1915, needless to say casualties among 'pushers' were very heavy when faced by German aircraft thus equipped. Painting by Tim Fisher.
