Kahoni is a charming, adventerous soul from the Alola region. Brought up in a peaceful village far removed from society, the Oricorio was raised to be a dedicated and honest person. Kahoni is quite romantic, as well as flirtatious. Very sarcastic in nature, he is constantly making quips and jabs at his friends. In addition, he is brutally honest, and won’t hesitate to tell you like it is. If he doesn’t like you, he won’t try to hide it. He never means any harm, however, making his jokes only in jest, and knowing where the line lies. Unfortunately, Kahoni’s adventurous spirit often leads him into mischief, and combined with his impulsiveness, any hang out with this bird will surely lead to trouble.
History
There was a small, tropical island just a short boat ride outside of the Alola region. A small, humble group of villagers lived on these islands, making it their home. They grew crops and wove their baskets and blankets, trading their goods with the ships that frequented the island. They were no savages; their society was a tranquil, peaceful village far removed from the modern day, yet was comfortable in their life without modern technologies.
This was the life that Kahoni Lee was brought up into. As a child, he was very much energetic and carefree, running along the sands with the other children. Although he was a fire type, that certainly didn’t stop him from splashing about the waters and being just as playful and outgoing as every other kid. When he wasn't helping out on the farms or with his family, the bird could be found surfing or building sand castles with his younger cousin, smiling and enjoying his days under the everlasting sun.
However, as ideal as his life may have seemed, that was certainly not the case. On the island, in their small wooden hut, it was only Kahoni and his mother, Makani. His father, a man known to the young bird only through description and name, had been a sailor upon many of the ships to frequent the island. A quick fling was had, promises were made, and the sailor was long gone by the time Makani found herself to be with child, the boy’s father never to be seen again.
Even though the circumstances surrounding his existence were rather tragic, the Oricorio harbored no harsh feelings towards his father or mother. In fact, he loved his mother dearly, and the two were very close. Often times, Makani would take little Kahoni out exploring on their island, to the beautiful waterfalls or climbing among the great big trees. As for his father, well, you can’t miss what you’ve never had. His uncle was quite a suitable father figure for the young bird, teaching him skills such as archery and navigating. And so, Kahoni’s childhood was spent happily among his family of birds.
As the bird began to mature into a teenager, however, he would quickly find a hobby he had previously had no interest in whatsoever: wooing the island girls. It happened suddenly and quickly, and before long it wasn’t unheard of for the young boy to be flirting with girls or out and about trying to impress them.
However, it was clear to everyone that Makani was not happy with her boy’s sudden flirtatious attitude. Mother and son began clashing heads, putting a never before experienced strain on their relationship. The harder his mother pushed, the further Kahoni distanced himself, to the point where their relationship was all but severed. How else was his mother supposed to react? He was acting much too like the sailor who had wooed her, and it needed to stop.
As time went on, Kahoni would only rebel against his mother, the two even shouting at each other late into the night. His mother’s resolve would slowly melt away, too tired by all the fighting and just wanting her sweet and outgoing child back. Slowly, the Oricorio would stay out later and later into the night, returning near midnight, if he came back at all. Their shouting matches became less and less frequent, Makani now just quietly disapproving.
When Kahoni was in his early twenties, the years of feud between mother and son finally came to a boiling point. The family of two broke out into a great fight. Words were said, things were thrown, and Kahoni stole away aboard a small raft, sailing away from his home. He was sick of being told what to do, he was living on his own from now on.
Unfortunately for the Oricorio, a terrible storm hit. Waves rose high above the man’s head, threatening to overturn his small wooden vessel. And overturn the boat it did, throwing the man, his food, and any of his belongings into the deep, angry sea. The moment he resurfaced, the man would cling desperately to his raft, only to be submerged once more. It was only a matter of time before he blacked out.
When he finally came to, Kahoni was in a strange white room, surrounded by people he didn’t know and machines he couldn’t even begin to understand. He heard beeping, and the people were all… staring at him. Some in relief, some in concern. And when he tried to move, sharp stabbing pains would shoot through him. Where was he?
As it turned out, a couple had found Kahoni upon the shores of Alola, and immediately had him taken to the nearest hospital. The man had found the mainland. He was in something called… a hospital? Where was he? What was going on? The poor bird was hopelessly confused. Luckily, he was released from the confines a few short days later, free of the white walls, free to go home. But where was home now?
One of the nurses, seeing how lost the poor bird was, offered to let him stay with her, at least for a while. And so, Kahoni would move in with the kind woman, named Hope, learning as much as he could about the mainland and modern things. Most things were still really hard to understand, but the bird certainly tried his best to wrap his head around it. And of course, she was glad to answer every last one of his questions while he stayed with her. He reminded her of her late brother, and it was almost as if the Oricorio himself was family.
However, he couldn’t stay here forever in this busy city. While he had long grown accustomed to the ever-present noise and the smoggy air in the few years he lived with the nurse, it was no place for him. No, he needed to be free, away from the artificial noise and dirty air. Once again, Hope would step in.
She knew of a magical set of islands, known as Raccolto. Her grandparents had lived there, and often in her youth she would explore the islands. After her grandparents had passed away, their old family farm had gone to waste; after all, nobody in her family wanted to run some shoddy old farm on an island in the middle of nowhere. But while no one in her family might have wanted it, Hope saw it as the perfect place for Kahoni to take up. And so, the kind nurse offered the farm to the bird temporarily, at least until he could pay for it. It wasn’t of any use gathering dust!
Of course, Kahoni gladly agreed to it! While he wasn't quite solid on the concept of currency yet, he was all too eager to move out to a rural island with his own farm. He quite missed the excitement of growing his own produce, tending the fields. And the prospect of adventure only sweetened the pot. So, with the agreement to hand over half his profit in exchange for the farm, Kahoni quickly hopped aboard the next ship, ready for his new life.
