Description Most people around the world view the Canadian prairies as a vast, flat, uninteresting, windswept terrain. But this is far from the reality. The prairies hold a spirit within them that is not present in any other place in our world. Indeed many parts of the prairie are flat, and produce some very high yields. But that is not the only or entire picture of this land.

In the last few days, I have had the pleasure of traveling though the southern part of Saskatchewan along highway 18 (and I use the term "highway" very loosely because at times, this route is not for the faint of heart). The vistas were breathtaking. We had the joy of walking on a prairie that is virtually untouched (except for grazing) and we were able to feel the power of this place in the wind and weather. We watched a storm approach and overtake a prairie ghost town, and had to run for shelter as the hail beat the ground. We felt the heat and and the ever present wind.

This picture is presented to demonstrate the difference of what the prairie really is, from what it is assumed to be. it is not just fields of wheat, it as also a sacred land with deep folds and convolutions that hold deep meanings.

In the next while I will post some of the images from this excursion. many of them will be similar to the ones I have posted before, but there is and always will be a fundamental difference in the power and spirit that I felt while in these lands.

I must admit, I didn't think the Prairies were like this.
An ecological paradise.

Hi Jenny,

the prairies are very different from what people think. But how can they know differently. Most of the well known pictures were taken in a very narrow band along the trans-Canada Highway. It is great to see, but it is not really representative of the entire area we call "prairie"

I have not been to an area like this in many years. Manitoba is beautiful, but we have nothing like this. One of the jokes about Saskatchewan is that it is so flat that you can never get lost because you can always see Regina. But the reality is so far different. It was a great trip, one that I shall remember for a long time.

That's great! It sounds amazing and getting a peek at it was a treat. I've been all over Canada but as you said most stick near the Trans Canada. Any time I was in Saskatchewan it was just passing through but I know the southern part is awesome, or so I've heard.

People have misconceptions about a lot of things sadly including salt water smelling bad but when it's mixed with wild roses becomes pure heaven.
This image is like a piece of heaven... beautiful, honest and bright! Thank you.

nice..
yea people often have a lage misconception of what the prairies are indeed... i actually grew up on the saskatchewan prairies, and i can say... that while they are very desolate at times, are also ver beautiful.. and the skies are something to see, and experience.. there a reason they call saskatchewan "the land of living skies"
I still live in Saskatchewan, but i now live farther north, and along the Manitoba border... in the area know as the park land belt, and looks very diferent fro this... in fact where i live is actually flatter but most of the land is covered in trees.... actually where i live most people dont even know Saskatchewan look like it does where i am.....

Hi Cole,

I don't think most people know the vast beauty of this country. They tend to see it in pieces, and usually only the pieces that are easy to get to, like along the Trans-Canada Highway. But as we know, this is only a very thin slice of what the country really is.

I have never lived in Saskatchewan but I have visited many times, and each time I see more of the raw beauty that it has to offer.

In Manitoba, I have been to most places from the far north (Brochet, Lac Brochet, Tadoule Lake and Churchill) to the east and west and so many points in between. It too has a beauty that most people do not know about

it is true most people only see a fraction of our country...
I my self included actually.. I have been as far as BC, but i have never seen much any of Alberta, even though i was actually born in Alberta and havnt really seen BC either.... I have been into Manitoba quite a few times. but only cause im only an hour from the border, and I have been to Winnipeg a number of times... but other than Duck Mountain Provincial park and Winnipeg, I have yet to see that province for what it is.... Canada is so vast it would take a lifetime to see it all.. and even then you never see all of it.. Churchill.. I was there once but barely remember it.. I would love to see it again..
I have found that even within the area i have lived most my life.. I sometimes find a place that leaves me aww, of the fact I had not even known it was there and its only an hour or two from my house....

If only travelers would go off the the well kept trails of the highways, and go on the more beaten paths of the back roads they would see things for what they really are... But you can very easily get lost doing that, but getting lost also adds to discovery of some of the best places as well..

I think the issue Cole is that people have a destination so they travel through vast areas, usually as fast s they can, to reach it. My destination was this area of Saskatchewan and I was there specifically to photograph it. Had I been going further west, I likely would not have taken this route and would not have seen any of the beauty either. Your point however is well taken. We do need to slow down and have a look at the beauty that our country offers.

I live in Saskatchewan and find that the sky is huge and breath-taking. I've tried to get pictures of it, but it never compares to the vast prairie skies themselves. It's amazing

I am not sure that one can ever really show the power and beauty of the prairie in a picture though I have tried many times. In my mind, the only way to experience her, is to live for a time upon her, and once you do that.... you will never be the same, because her power is so great.

Very true. My classmates and I traveled to China and could not describe the prairies to the people we met, not even in two languages. The colours of the sky and stars on a clear night outside of the city were beyond words.
