Description
Most people around the world view the Canadian prairies as a vast, flat, uninteresting, windswept terrain. But this is far from the reality. The prairies hold a spirit within them that is not present in any other place in our world. Indeed many parts of the prairie are flat, and produce some very high yields. But that is not the only or entire picture of this land.In the last few days, I have had the pleasure of traveling though the southern part of Saskatchewan along highway 18 (and I use the term "highway" very loosely because at times, this route is not for the faint of heart). The vistas were breathtaking. We had the joy of walking on a prairie that is virtually untouched (except for grazing) and we were able to feel the power of this place in the wind and weather. We watched a storm approach and overtake a prairie ghost town, and had to run for shelter as the hail beat the ground. We felt the heat and and the ever present wind.
This picture is presented to demonstrate the difference of what the prairie really is, from what it is assumed to be. it is not just fields of wheat, it as also a sacred land with deep folds and convolutions that hold deep meanings.
In the next while I will post some of the images from this excursion. many of them will be similar to the ones I have posted before, but there is and always will be a fundamental difference in the power and spirit that I felt while in these lands.

Highway 83 in Southern Sask? The 83 that comes to mind is in Manitoba & runs N-S through Virden, Melita, Minot... Major road that parallels the border.
Highway 13 aka Redcoat trail?Β Weyburn, Carlyle and the like...Β If so then you missed a beaut of a barn a 15 km detour south of Redvers on Highway 8: bulloney.deviantart.com/art/Moβ¦
And I can vouch for those roads not being for the faint of heart!!  Good thing you didn't take Manitoba 3 / Saskatchewan 18, it is in much poorer condition (though you would have seen this one: bulloney.deviantart.com/art/Se⦠, bulloney.deviantart.com/art/La⦠)

It was along highway 18 in Saskatchewan.Β Don't know why I said 83, atrophied brain perhaps.Β But thanks for pointing out the road, so i could correct it.

A splendid view for sure Wayne. Reminds me a lot of places in Wyoming and Montana. I like your views about the prairie as I feel much the same.

Wonderful commentary to accompany a beautiful photo. Yes, we are "the land of living skies".
Can't wait to see more.

This landscape is so incredibly beautiful. It's like viewing what the 1st pioneers to this area must have seen.
Wonderful cloud formations.

Gorgeous! This has a few of my favourite things about living in the prairies - the rolling hills, old barbed wire fences and big dramatic skies.

I love Saskatchewan. When I first drove across the country, we passed along a road and each side had sunflowers growing for as far as the eye could see. The sky was gorgeous, as well. It was breathtaking.
You've captured it brilliantly

It almost reminds me of the beginning of the badlands and South Dakota. (Of course, it was many, many years ago I went through there so my memory could be playing tricks on me.)
Hugs,
Anj

Last time i was in Scotland i was 15, travelling for 4 weeks on my bike through England , Scotland and Wales. so nearly 40 years ago !!
Have good and fond memory's of the wildness & weather, and the hardships it could give !!
Was travelling alone, with all the possesions in one rugsack and a small tent attached to the bike.
Can remember was standing sheltering from the pouring rain for hours, at the road to Inverness at Loch Ness, and nearly all cars and lorry that passed stopped to ask iff everything was alright and needed a lift !
same on the road from Fort William too Mallag (west coast), had to punctures in one day , and while repairing the inner tube on the roadside everybody stopped to see iff they could help.
And on two occassions with rain, soaking wet and not bothered to put up the tent , i nocked on the door of a farm too ask iff i could sleep in the Barn and they took me in and helped me with warm dry clothes from their son in order to get mine dry and offered me a bed and a meal for the night.
Same at an old Monastrie on the way to Mallag.
Often think iff it would still be the same.
greetz len.
