Description

Last month, I featured a detailed article of the notorious Jack the Ripper in a London Gazzette (deliberately mis-spelled) tabloid that I created for my first novel, Pulp Heroes - More than Mortal. This time, I am presenting two more tabloid covers from my second novel, Pulp Heroes - Khan Dynasty. The first is a full-page article of the sudden death of Howard Jekyll, a man we first encounter (chronologically, but written five years later) in my Gothic horror novel The Castaway, a story that ends roughly a day before Khan Dynasty begins. There are several Easter Eggs buried in this article, including references to young Mary Reilly, and Sir Alexander Matheson (the Tai Pan of Hong Kong). There is also mention of Jules Verne, Captain Nemo, and Ned Land, and several important events that were top of the news during that time period. I found this was a great way to supply lots of background information to the reader, without becoming an information dump that most people would ignore.

The second “painting” discusses the mental damage caused by reading Penny Dreadfuls, cheap (and often lurid) popular serial literature produced during the 19th century in the United Kingdom. The article quotes German psychiatrist Frederic Wertham, writer of a book entitled Seduction of the Innocent. (Fred actually existed and wrote a book with this title, but 60 years later. His belief was that comic books were the cause of juvenile delinquency and that Batman and Robin were flaming homosexuals. Strange fellow.) Again, several Easter Eggs, including references to Doctor Abraham van Helsing (from the novel Dracula), Joseph ‘Elephant Man’ Merrick, Doctor Henry Jekyll, and his alter persona, Edward Hyde. Klara Polzl (Adolph Hitler’s mother) is mentioned and so is Martha Talban (often believed to be the first victim of Jack the Ripper. Again, lots of information that relates to events in the novel. These faux newspapers allow me to report facts (and sometimes a little fiction) that might not tie directly to the story, but certainly add important background.

   Hope you enjoy!
