The forest background reminds me of the book The Wild Robot, which I read last Winter/Spring for a class in my LIS program.  Normally I don't go for science fiction, but I found myself liking the 'learning and conditioning' of Roz's emotional responses and the refusal to use (human) words for language, but not skimping on meaningful and dramatic actions.  This is usually antagonistic and closed minded from humans and other robots from Roz's make and model.  That's right, humans have a very minor role in this story and it is generally understood to be destructive and antagonistic.
