Description Closeup of (N)Oliveroci's Ella (I think!) .. Notice her whiskers. They've been chewed off by her mother. All the kittens were subject to this treatment. I've seen this behavior before, but I have no idea why cat-moms do it. Hope you like this photo!

Edit: I just realized how similar Ella's pose is to Oliver, her dad's pose! Check it out Age wise in the photos, they're only a few weeks apart.

Full view highly recommended!

Some facts:
Breed: Ocicat
Gender: female
Color:Black/silver spotted tabby (OCI ns 24 )
Age:12 weeks old when the photo was taken (born February 10th, 2007)

.. Takk for kommentar!

That's very strange... The only thing I found on Google was "When kittens are cleaned by their mother, she may chew off some or all of the whiskers - don't worry, this is normal and they will soon grow back." [link]

Meh, but anyway, beautiful picture and beautiful model, even whiskerless

I did check with a breeder, and she told me cat moms do this to prevent their kittens to wander too far off. Exactly how shorter whiskers affect kittens I don't know though.

i thought if they get their wiskers cut they will get stuck in something because thier wiskers are as wide as the widest part of their body.

perhaps the mother cat did it out of fear. dumber animals like rabbits and hamsters eat their young when they are frightened... my friend's rabbit simply chewed off all its babies' ears once!!! they looked really odd.. some had 1.5 ears, some had half an ear.... it was eerie!!! hahahaha

That's so beautiful. I didn't know that mother cats chewed the whiskers off their kittens...maybe they're trying to make sure they can't get too far?

Either way, I love your photographs

Why would the mother do that? Don't they use the whiskers for sensing or something?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

wazabees In reply to Nekorin-Gatacat [2007-09-05 15:25:31 +0000 UTC]

They do indeed. It's so they don't bump into things when it's really dark.

Aww!

Maybe it's some over protective mechanism... Since cats use their whiskers to better know their surroundings when they are moving around, maybe the mom doesn't want her kittens to run too far away, so she chews off their whiskers so they'll be too scared to leave.

Don't know if its answered already but cat moms do this so they can keep the kitten close to them... Since cats need their whiskers to kinda feel what's around them.. if they dont have them they will stick close to their mother.

I've seen it a lot of times before with kittens.
