Description Based on technology developed of producing the smaller drone fighter, the concept was applied to producing a self directed autonomous escort and patrol vessel. The craft features many of the same design features scaled up to the size needed to allow for safe hyperspace transit, and the installation of powerful starship grade heavy weapons.Able to remain in close escort of a convoy or remain on station in a system for several months the escort is intended to be a formidable combatant, with high acceleration, and heavy armor as well as a mix of missiles and Fusion cannon that can dominate any small warship or converted commercial ship used by pirates, and commerce raiders.

A multi-Million credit computer core, and millions of credits worth of software give the ship skill levels equivalent to a trained starship combat crew, without risking the lives of skilled crews on dangerous assignments. The AI control core, can react, and to a certain degree anticipate potential threats as well as develop complex tactical maneuvers exploiting the vessels innate advantages.

The lack of organics onboard allows the manufacture of a hull at greatly reduced prices since life support, and acceleration compensation hardware do not need to be installed. In addition space dedicated to the crew and marines can be used for fuel, ordnance, and combat robotics to defend the ship, or to board disabled hostiles. The combination of a much higher tooth to tail ration than organic creed vessels, and the lack of any hesitation in the face of dangerous odds, combine to create a truly dangerous opponent for most ship it is likely to encounter.

The ships weapons consists of a 50 ton missile battery capable of launching multiple missiles in a single salvo, and a pair of linked fusion cannon that can cut through light armor wit great ease.In addition it carries several drone fighters optimized for point defense operations to protect the ship from missiles, torpedoes, and armed small craft/fighters. allowing the main ship to carry a totally offensive load out rather than dedicate the limited hardpoints of the vessel to self defense weaponry. when faced with a relentless, and aggressive combat vessel with heavy anti-ship capabilities for its size, most hostile vessels will think twice, then find an easier mark.

due to the absence of crew this vessel is also well suited to remaining on station without relief for months. the ship can self refuel from nearby gas giants, any large body of water, or depots in it's system then quickly return to it's assigned location. If deployed in an ambush mode it can loiter concealed in some local feature such as debris fields, the upper atmosphere of gas giants, or hiding in the shadow of comets, asteroids or small planetoids. Only emerging when a target or threat within it's targeting parameters appears.

Tests have been conducted using the vessel as a long range strike vessel, conducting strikes against key targets which would pose a serious risk of loss to any strike force. while the financial loss would be significant if the vessel were destroyed, it would not cause the loss of a crew, and their acquired experience.

I wonder, if this could be used in a rescue situation in which time is critical, and there's no other ships about...

Possibly if an area with life support were included in the design.... Hmm that's an option I should add

Well, when I first saw the illo, the image of one of those drones parked by a wreaked starship, being mobbed by survivors in spacesuits popped into my head. Now that would make for a nice "disaster at sea" story.

It does make a good idea. Nice mental image you had there.

If only NASA built its telescopes with all these features.

Who says they don't. ,

Out in space Hubble is actually armed to the teeth, and protecting us from the scum of the galaxy

Oh, so they didn't really have to fix Hubble's mirror, they were adjusting its ion cannon targeting system. Makes so much sense now!

Yeah, one of the enlisted ground crew forgot to remove  the "Remove Before Flight" safety pins....makes a lot more sense than "Oh, a bunch of geniuses used the wrong measurements for this multi-million dollar mirror."

I wonder how many years bad luck mis-grinding a multi-million dollar mirror is.
