Description Senior Sergeant, Anti-Aircraft Artillery
Luftwaffe, Poland, 1939
World War II

This rather dashing looking individual is a senior sergeant of an anti-aircraft artillery unit stationed in Poland right after the invasion on September 1st, 1939. As part of the Luftwaffe, his rank insignia and overall uniform is different from that of the regular army. (Just as a quick history lesson, the German designation for the military as a whole is the Wehrmacht, while the army was known as the Heer, the navy was the Kriegsmarine, and the air force was the Luftwaffe.)

While you can’t tell in this illustration, he is decked out in a rather fancy dress uniform for the time. He is wearing a blue-gray tunic with red lining on the collar and red and whit insignia on the collar patch. His trousers and shoes are fully white and he is holding white gloves. His cap also has a white top with red lining. Overall a very splendid looking uniform. He also carries the famous Luftwaffe dress dagger, more a show of status then an effective defensive weapon. These daggers were highly sought after by Allied troops, and were seen as valuable war trophies.

Also please forgive me for the rather horrifying looking expression he has. Drawing faces is hard.
