Description

Infantryman, Spanish Blue Division
German Army, Leningrad Front, 1942
World War II

So after a while of debating I’ve decided to finally start posting my art on this barely used account. Most of these drawings will be military themed (Cause of course they are, this is me we are talking about). The soldiers will be from a variety of different wars and nations, including the bad guys. These are purely for artistic and educational purposes, not for any political or ideological reasoning. I just like to draw soldiers.

Each one will also come with a description of what/who they are and etc.

Ok, finally on to this dude right here. He is a member of the Spanish Blue Division, which was made up of volunteers from Spain sent to fight for the Germans in World War II. Since Spain just ended a devastating civil war in 1939, they remained neutral in the war, however the fascist leader and victor of the civil war Francisco Franco sent a division to the Eastern Front to help his buddy Hitler fight the Soviets.

The division was deployed to the Soviet Union in July 1943. At its height it consisted of around 45,000 men and fought mainly in the battle and subsequent siege of Leningrad. While the Spaniards fought hard they suffered around 60 percent casualties and were withdrawn back to Spain in October 1943.

While they are Spanish, they were equipped with German uniforms and weapons. The infantryman above is wearing the standard German field-grey uniform and kit, and he is armed with an MP-40 submachine gun. The only thing he has to distinguish himself from a German soldier is a badge on his right sleeve, which enlarged above. The insignia is also on the right of his helmet. The name ‘Blue Division’ comes from the Spanish fascist party blue shirts that were worn under the German uniforms.
